About the Book
In a world split by war between the Angels of Mortals and the Ancient Order, nineteen-year-old Elara Veylor has trained her whole life to fight the monsters on the other side. When she fails to become a dragon rider, she’s assigned as a Keeper meant to tame captured enemies.
Her first assignment is Xander, a dangerous vampire-werewolf hybrid chained beneath the Academy and infamous for crimes she doesn’t fully understand. He’s infuriating, powerful, and impossible to control, and yet, the longer they’re forced together, the more Elara begins to question everything she’s been taught about monsters and men.
As tensions rise and betrayal shatters the safety of the Academy, Elara and Xander are thrown together in ways neither of them expected. A forbidden bond ties their fates, blurring the line between enemy and ally, and forcing Elara to wonder if the greatest danger isn’t the creature she was meant to tame… but the truths buried in their divided world.

“I do when you’re about to get yourself killed.”
Xander’s face shifted like I’d slapped him. Not embarrassment, fury. His tail lashed once, ears flat, fangs sliding down in a flash of white. “You think this is about jealousy? I’m trying to keep you alive!”
"Mind turning this shit show down an inch? As much as I enjoy the performance, it’s starting to look… what’s the word for it again? Oh right. Petty."
Kai Thornwell - A good friend of the main character Elara.

Kai bumped my shoulder, grin lazy but eyes a little too bright. “Smile, Veylor. Might get paired with a fluffy werewolf pup.”
Kai’s face was carved from worry trying to look like swagger. “So… two vampires, Lys, Darius. And you’re breathing because Tall Dark and Murderous decided to play bodyguard?”
“No, I’m serious. I get that you want answers. But Rowan’s not safe. He’s unpredictable, and he hates the system. You don’t know where he draws his lines.”
Serin Valehart - A friend of the main character Elara
Line 1: Nervous
Line 2: Shy
Line 3: Warning tone

Serin didn’t look up from her notes. “Statistically, we’ll all get standard cases, low-ranking wolves and thin-blood vamps. Dangerous but manageable.” Her voice trembled anyway.
Serin looked up from her soup, wide-eyed behind her glasses. “Mine didn’t laugh. Mireth just stared at me and…smelled the air? Like she could taste me.” She shuddered and pulled her sleeves down over her hands. “But she obeyed the leash.”
“Careful, El,” Serin whispered. “That kind of talk gets you flagged.”
Professor Halvane - Teacher at the Rune Keeper Academy

Professor Halvane’s voice cut through the hum of wards and murmuring students. “Two Courts,” he said, chalk scraping across the black wall of runes behind him. “Two empires. Two definitions of survival.”
“The Ancient Order,” he continued, tapping the scarlet half of the map, “vampire and werewolf dominion. They call humans stock.”
“The Crimson Circle sits the Blood Throne, the oldest vampires alive. Werewolves enforce their laws. Humans there are livestock or pets.”
Rowan Vex - A complicated friend of the main character Elara. Also friends with people who wants her dead.
Line 1: Teasing

Rowan leaned on the edge of our table, grin lazy but eyes watchful. “Careful, Veylor. They’re trying to scare you off. If you run, they get bragging rights.”
Rowan shrugged, eyes still on me. “Or trying not to rip your throat out. Same thing, really.”
“Don’t tell anyone. I have a reputation.”
Xander Kallister - Younger

“I did it!” he shouted, voice high and pure with laughter. “I did it! I did it!!
“Do not!” he protested, stumbling and almost falling as his tail snagged on a bush. “You’re laughing wrong.”
“Yeah,” he said with solemn, childish wisdom. “With joy.”
Lysandra Mirevale - Also called "Lys". Enemy of Elara
- english
- female young adult
- female adult
Lysandra’s whisper sliced just loud enough for me to hear. “Dragon reject gets a hybrid? How poetic.”
“Well,” Lysandra said sweetly, “if it isn’t our miracle girl. Researching how not to die?”
Lysandra’s smile sharpened. “Some of us don’t have to. Our cases aren’t feral science experiments.”
Darius Kael - A friend of Lysandra
- english

“Yet.” Darius’s voice was cool stone. “Hybrids don’t submit. When it turns on you, there’ll be no warning.”
Darius’s gaze was stone cold. “You shouldn’t be here alone.”
Mr. Rhen - The main character Elara's mentor. Also a teacher at the Rune Keepers Academy
- english
- male adult
“Elara,” he said, voice low and even. “Sit.” I did, trying to keep my knees from bouncing. “You’re scheduled for your first hunt.” He didn’t ask, he already knew.
“You’re here,” Rhen said calmly. “You faced him. You learned something.”
“Hybrids test,” he went on. “They push because everyone’s always pushed them. You push back, they measure again. That’s the language.” His gaze sharpened. “You survived the Riders. That means something. Don’t forget it.”
Rouka - A friend of Xander Kallister
Line 1: Teasing, happy
Line 2: Teasing
Line 3: Scolding

He threw an arm around Xander’s shoulders, tugging him close. “Where’ve you been, you old fart?”
Rouka only laughed and plopped down beside him, utterly unbothered. “Did they let you go because they got tired of your grumpy ass?”
“Luke, stop that!” Rouka barked, turning toward the pup. “Remember what happened last time you played near the fire?”

High Keeper Talvek strode to the center dais, dark coat sweeping behind him. Even the air felt heavier when he raised a hand. “Combat Keeper initiates. Today you take responsibility for power that was not meant to be wielded. You will train with your assigned case until you can control them. Or until you cannot.”
Talvek’s expression didn’t change, only his tone sharpened. “Secure the hybrid. Use everything.”

When it spoke again, the sound rolled through me. “Human. Step closer.”
“Keeper Elara Veylor,” he said, and the way he spoke my name sounded like a judgment. “You have done something unprecedented.”
“You did.” His gaze sharpened, pinning me in place. “You bound a hybrid. You wield power that should not exist. And in one night, you nearly burned half of our academy.”
Selene Kallister - Xander Kallister's sister

That earned a sharp pause from Selene, who had been hanging strips of meat over the fire. Her hands stilled midair. “You’re going to the Blood Throne?” she said, voice cracking halfway between disbelief and fear. “Xander, they’ll kill you.”
“I won’t let you go,” she said softly.
“This is different,” she hissed, moving closer to him on her knees. “This is worse. They executed our parents for having a hybrid! What do you think they’ll do if they see you in their city?”
