Diabolical [Fan-Made Divergent Thriller]
Project Overview
This will be a dramatic reading from my own work-in-progress (currently 90+ pages) story! Every chapter is written in the point of a character and it changes throughout the novel. Most roles listed have at least one individual chapter written about them.

Marcus is the primary "antagonist" of the story, and also my own original character. Much of the novel overall is told from his point of view, which I find interesting. He was originally Candor, the truth-tellers, and now he is Erudite. I'd like to hear a lot of different ranges between what you imagine him as. Sometimes during the first section of the story, he is lovestruck and passionate, other times he flaunts his power, and even other parts there is deep thinking. Also, much of his chapters are his thoughts and plans.
I keep thinking of the plan in the back of my mind. “Manipulate to Eliminate.” I’d have to persuade Talia that Harrison was in fact maniacal and that she could never love him.
“After all, you did steal my last one, and by now, you know close to everything there is to know. You don’t need more.”
I know what’s gotten into her. This is the worst-case scenario. “I-I don’t understand...what’s gotten into you?” My voice is stuttering. My arms flail up in the air automatically. I can barely control myself. This will be the end of me.
Anything goes for Talia! For most of the story, she is the female protagonist. She originated in Dauntless and transferred to Erudite in hope of something new. She is a very mercurial character, like most other characters, but mostly, she's a proud, optimistic, peppy girl.
“I’m fabulous,” I have to lie. “How are you?”
The Erudite Members throw elbows at us and I feel a pang in my shoulder. They bruised it, didn’t they? I don’t hear one remark of “Excuse me.” Guess that’s an Erudite thing as well.
“You’ve gotten into me, Marcus! You’ve been manipulating me, haven’t you?”
Harrison Gray is a fiesty, heroic male lead appearing predominantly in the first arc. He is oriented around justice and will do anything to protect Talia. Harrison did not transfer from Dauntless, and that's how he knows Talia, since they grew up together. Overall, he stays serious and committed to whatever he does.
“You hear me, Marcus?” I shout, “Stop, or next time I won’t miss!”
(The quotation here is Talia's speech, so play with that.) I can’t even help myself. “You’re Erudite, so of course I don’t know!” I grab her close to me and swing her around. Her laugh soothes my ears and I love it. No, I love her for much more than her laugh. “We just did that, didn’t we?”
Images of death and gore spring into my mind. War rages. He did this, he did this, didn’t he? This was all part of that bastard’s plan...wasn’t it? Of course.
Mark is a mercurial teenage Dauntless. Like Harrison, he is justice-oriented (for different reasons, however) and has stayed in Dauntless his whole life. He does have a few chapters devoted to himself, but is not a fully major character. His chapters are very emotional and powerful.
Then, it hits me again. That stupid phrase, Justice before Feelings.
But, I must be the valiant knight everyone has expected me to be. I must make him proud.
“I’m sorry, okay. I’m really sorry. I loved her as well.” The words come out in a whine. “I-I’m really sorry…”
Beth is Harrison's partner-in-crime. She transferred to Dauntless from Abnegation, but fits right in with the pack somehow. She is great when she is around Harrison, but the Talia case hits close to home. She has met Talia, thanks to Harrison. Beth is responsible for making Marcus enraged when Harrison isn't around. Normally, she is really laid-back, but with a hint of sass in her tone.
“Sure thing. Azra won’t mind, we can usually eat anywhere as long as we can come back here and meet her at a certain time. She’s pretty relaxed.”
“Come on, I’m not gonna do anything terrible to you. Let’s just have a bit of fun, eh?”
“Aw, it was nothing. All you had to do was act convincing...that was the hard part…”
This version of Marcus is the more "diabolical" one, so to say. At this time in the story, he's trapped in Candor jail for his crime and has spent time having harsh, powerful conversations. This Marcus is more insane and tipped on revenge a bit more than the first one. This actor must be able to read Marcus's thoughts well.
No one ever comes anymore. I am the disgrace of Erudite.
“Sure, I know,” I reply. “Say what you want, but don’t expect me to believe it.”
“Trial is all I need to say, boy. I’m not fully deaf. Your name’s Blaise Tyler, and you’re just another Candor initiate.”
Cole Richardson is the leader of Candor (a little older than most of the other characters) and close friend of Marcus. He was raised Dauntless, surprisingly, but transferred to Candor and became leader. Cole's the good side of Marcus, he keeps him straight when he shouldn't, and Marcus disobeying him leads to one of the main conflicts of the story. In the second arc, Cole becomes a more prominent character than he was in the first arc, and there are many chapters written from his perspective. Cole's voice is very noble, dignified, but flexible. I want this actor to try to re-imagine the "father" of the group.
"Marcus, this looks amazing. Just one question...what's this?"
“You say that every time too. I thought you learned your lesson to not question your superior, your elder, your legal guardian, which just happens to be the Leader of the mighty faction of Candor. You should be lucky, and thankful for what you have.”
Maybe I asked the wrong questions for once in my life. I seem to try so hard to say what I think is morally correct, but in the end it comes out wrong. I should’ve asked him something about the crime before my mind said those words I’m sure I’ve said a million times: “Thank you for your Candor.”
Blaise Tyler is a very fragile boy. He comes from Abnegation and transferred to Candor mistakenly (in the case because he doesn't like it). He stutters quite a bit and can't stand the drama. He is particularly afraid of Cole and Marcus. Blaise does have chapters written from his perspective, but they're short and jotting, like the way he speaks.
“H...How...d-do you know my n-name...?”
I race up the stairs. I need Cole...Cole… I can’t control myself. I didn’t want to hear what I just heard. I hit a wall, falling down to my knees again and hunching over. The whimpering returns faster than I thought.
“It was Ma…” The last syllable doesn’t get all the way out of my mouth. “MARCUS!” I shout, my eyes wide. Immediately, I crumble down back into my spot. I'm in big trouble.
Arabella is Cole's niece (I imagine her around 14 or 15), or something along those lines. No one seems to know her origins, but somehow she ended up at Candor and under Cole's care. She wants to be free from Candor's captivity and from Cole's scolding, but doesn't end up. She does question Marcus and plans on letting him escape Candor jail. Even though there are no chapters written from her point of view, she does pop up in the second arc a bit.
“You’ve given me this talk five million times, Dad. I don’t need it anymore. I don’t need you anymore.”
“I mean, I get that I’m just a dependant, but let me do something to fix Blaise. He needs help!”
“Why? We’re just going to get you out of here. Shouldn’t you be happy? Oh. Well, sorry to deny you, Marcus, but you’re an innocent man. We’re getting you out of here.”
This will be a VERY flexible role. Some lines come from guards, to Erudite visitors, to the Dauntless leader, Azra. I want to see some creativity and difference between lines. This might not be a serious role, but try it for fun!
::Guard:: “You’re under maximum security from here on out. It’s impossible to get off scot-free, and there will be a bigger trouble if you try to escape.”
::Azra:: “Make them the best they can be. Never rest, even when they do. Stiff,” she stares into Beth’s eyes, “you’ve got set A while Joker’s on normal shift B. Enough lecture, go out and do your thing. Make Dauntless proud.”
((Read it nice and spooky, I want to see how this sounds) Suddenly, she trips, dropping her briefcase. It slides down the remaining flight, her body following. She lies there at the foot of the last staircase, a puncture wound to her heart. Her corpse adds an eeriness to the Candor Headquarters.
