Dear Evan Hansen: The Animated Series
Project Overview
Greetings! This project is going to be our attempt at making an animated series based on the theatre musical, Dear Evan Hansen.
Synopsis: Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of a young man with a social anxiety disorder who so yearns to make a connection with his peers that he fabricates a relationship with a deceased student to become closer to the boy’s family. When a classmate commits suicide, shy Evan Hansen finds himself at the center of the tragedy and turmoil. In a misguided attempt to comfort the boy’s grieving family, Evan pretends he was good friends with their son. He invents a fabricated email account to “prove” their friendship. When a fake suicide note makes its way online, Evan finds himself the unintended face of a viral video about loneliness and friendship. As his social currency skyrockets, Evan is drawn deeper and deeper into the lie. His relationship with his actual mother wanes in comparison to that of his “shiny new family.” He finally lands the girl of his dreams, and most importantly--he’s no longer invisible. Eventually, Evan is forced to decide: Will he give himself to the fantasy he’s created or bite the bullet and risk losing everything he’s ever wanted?

Smart, sincere, and painfully self-conscious, Evan prefers to hover in the background, a supporting player in his own life, too afraid to step forward into the spotlight and risk ridicule or, what might be worse, no one noticing him at all.

A sensitive, sophisticated high school junior. Cool without realizing it, Zoe couldn't care less about the status games and popularity rites of high school. Funny and bright, she has grown up in the long shadow cast by her volatile older brother, Connor, tyrannized along with the rest of her family by his out-of-control behavior. Few rooms are as familiar to her as the inside of a family therapist’s office. Zoe compensates for her brother’s darkness by striving to be warm, nice to everyone, the kind of person who goes out of her way to learn the names of the kids who sit by themselves at lunch. She feels a terrible ambivalence over her brother’s death, finding it difficult to forgive him for all he did, and at the same time forgive that part of herself that feels nothing but relief in the fact that he’s gone.

Connor and Zoe’s mother. To Evan, she seems to be the perfect mother, nurturing, available, and willing to talk about anything. To her own children, it’s a bit more complicated.

Connor and Zoe’s father. Though often tense and taciturn, Larry shows a different face to the world, representing for Evan the dad he always wished for: strong, confident, and more than anything, reliable, someone to be counted on.

Droll and sarcastic, Jared carries himself with the kind of practiced swagger only the deeply insecure can truly pull off. He is forced by his parents to hang out with family friend Evan, for whom he claims to have nothing but disdain. Jared masks his self-doubt with braggadocio and a know-it-all arrogance.
