Confused man who has had issues with sleeping

Confused man who has had issues with sleeping

Project Overview

Looking for somebody to play the part of James for my audio drama Scoop Hound. The part pays $15 through paypal. I'll be picking my selection for the part by Thursday afternoon.

James was forced to breathe gas that kept him awake for nearly a month while being observed by mysterious strangers. He suddenly wakes up alone and calls into a radio show to report on his experience. He is tired and very confused.

JAMES

Hello? Hello. Thanks for taking my call.

SCOOPHOUND

Yeah. Sure. What's up?

JAMES
(confused)

I just escaped from some people in a house. Or maybe they let me go? I don't really know. I'm still pretty confused about how I got out here.

SCOOPHOUND

What? Where are you?

JAMES

I don't really know. I just know that I don't have to be here anymore. That's all I really wanted.

SCOOPHOUND

What are you talking about?

JAMES

You really want me to explain the whole experience to you?

SCOOPHOUND

I guess so. Yes.

JAMES

Well about a month ago I heard a knock on my door. I went to answer the door and the next thing I know I had a bag over my head and was in a car. I've spent the last month inside of a house with some scientists. I think they were scientists. They had lab coats on and were taking lots of notes. That's what scientists do right?

SCOOPHOUND

Ok.

JAMES

I don't know any scientists. I've never known any. I've never had a friend or anybody say "hey, I'm a scientist. This is how I dress at work and these are the things I do when I'm working." I only have my knowledge about scientists from science classes and saturday morning cartoons.

SCOOPHOUND

This sounds like the men in suits to me. They've been conducting experiments on people.

JAMES

Well they're the ones who came and got me and dropped me off at this big house. The windows were sealed up and the door gave me a shock anytime I tried to open it. There was no escaping that house. I was trapped there.

SCOOPHOUND

Ok. So then what?

JAMES

Well they just observed me for the first couple of days. It was pretty normal except for the whole being watched at all times. I woke up in the morning and there they were. I made breakfast and there they were. Even when I went to the bathroom or took a shower they were there watching me. None of them ever said a word to me. They just watched and took notes on their little clip boards.

SCOOPHOUND

Hmmmm....

JAMES

Well, on the 5th day all the lights in the house started flashing red. All of the fellas with lab coats filed into the living room and opened up a hatch in the floor underneath the carpet. I didn't even know there was a hatch in there. It just seemed like a normal living room to me. Next thing I know they were all standing around with gas masks on. Gas started pouring into the room. I didn't know what to do so I tried to find any room to hide out in. It didn't work though. I started feeling pretty weird. Kinda nauseous. The gas just kept coming and coming and coming. I don't think it ever stopped for the rest of my time in that house. It was just a thick haze throughout every room.

SCOOPHOUND

What kind of gas was it?

JAMES

I don't know, but I couldn't sleep. I'd lie down with those men all standing around the edge of the bed staring at me with their masks on. It wasn't that I didn't want to sleep. It was that I couldn't. I'd just lay under the covers in the bed nice and cozy. I'd close my eyes and try to drift off into a peaceful sleep and then nothing. Just in bed. Wide awake. For weeks. I can't even explain to you the kinds of things that go through a persons mind when they go for that long without sleep. The things I heard. The things I saw. I don't know if any of it was real. Waking life started to feel like a painful dream.

SCOOPHOUND

You seem pretty well put together right now for a guy who went for almost a month without sleeping.

JAMES

At some point they had me strapped down to a bed. I don't know if it was because I hurt someone or I had hurt myself. All I remember was blood. Lots and lots of blood. That was the last memory I have of not being strapped down. I must have fallen asleep at some point though because eventually I woke up. I woke up on the floor inside the house. The sun was shining bright through the windows and the door was wide open. No gas filled rooms. No men in lab coats. There wasn't even furniture inside the house anymore. Just a note on the floor that said.

JAMES

Thank you for participating. Feel free to stay as long as you like. Please call the number below and tell us about your experience.

SCOOPHOUND

Weird. Did you call the number.

JAMES

Well.... Yeah.

SCOOPHOUND

Ok. And?

JAMES

And you answered. This is the phone call now that I'm making. Look. I'm just doing this to finish whatever it is you wanted with me. Please. I am begging you. Don't do this to me again. I'll go down to the plaza. I've learned my lesson. You can tell your leader that he wins. I know now what he meant by being truly free. I've seen the other side. I'm ready for his salvation.

SCOOPHOUND

Wait. Are you talking about Klaus? I don't run with that circle of people. This sounds more like the men in suits. Klaus is just some creep who's trying to con the people of our town. What would he have to do with all of this.

JAMES

The men in suits. They aren't men at all. They're... They're angels.

SCOOPHOUND

They're just men. Bad, evil men doing awful things. Nothing more than that.

JAMES

I have to go now. Please let our leader know I passed the test. I'll be with them all soon.
