Chrono Trigger the Musical

Project Overview

Hey everyone! Man on the Internet here. You might remember me from Undertale the Musical. I’m going bigger for my next project - Chrono Trigger the Musical, based on one of my all-time favorite games. For those unfamiliar, Chrono Trigger is a role-playing game featuring people who travel through time to save the past, present, and future from an eldritch abomination called Lavos. This project is taking the music and story of Chrono Trigger, formerly a voice-less game, and putting voice and lyrics to it, making it a musical more accessible for those who don’t, can’t, or won’t play video games.

While most of the information (including the actual lines to voice over) can be found in this Google document, I'll be copying the basics here just in case something goes wrong and Google won't display anything. (Note that if Google truly doesn't work for people I can make some posts here copy and pasting the information from the various sheets) -

Also note that some of this may not even apply to CCC

  • Send auditions in to (my email address in the Google document), with the subject line “Chrono Trigger the Musical Auditions.” If you already know me on Discord you may send auditions through there instead. If you submit through CCC this obviously does not apply.

  • The deadline is October 15th, 2017, at Midnight Central Time (UTC-6).

  • You must be 16 or older to audition

  • Auditions should all be mp3 or wav files, with one file per character, in a .zip file labelled [ChronoAuditions_YourName]. Individual audio files should be labelled [CharacterName_YourName] (e.g. Magus_Alex). No slate. Obviously the zip files won't apply if you submit through CCC.

  • Anyone who auditions as a singer is automatically considered for chorus, as this is a chorus-heavy musical. The Chorus role is to demonstrate pure singing talent, if you don’t feel your other auditions show it, or for those who don’t want a main speaking role. If you do not want to be considered for chorus, please let me know in the body of your email.

  • Undertale the Musical took a year and a half, all together, to put together. While it's certainly possible that all your lines/singing can be recorded well before then, because this is a musical and people need time to learn the songs that's unlikely. As such, this is a long-term project, and for legal reasons, unpaid.

  • Auditioners may receive "callbacks," time permitting, in which I give feedback as to their auditions via email (so as to keep things private) and they get a chance to resubmit based on feedback. Responding to these callbacks are not required, and any feedback therein is solely my opinion of how I think you can improve the audition.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about auditioning, let me know and I will do my best to address them in a timely manner!

Crono

Crono is the main character, and yes, he talks in this adaptation. The gimmick of silent protagonist on stage worked once with Frisk, but wouldn’t work here. A pretty typical Shonen protagonist, determined to accomplish great things in life despite his lack of social standing. Preferred Range: Tenor. Must be able to belt.

  • Okay, mom, I'm up, I'm up...

  • Oh my god! Where’d she go? Lucca, what happened?

  • I’m not going to lose you again, Marle. That’s a promise.
(Line 4) We’re the only ones who know what Lavos is. And that means we have a duty to stop it! So who’s with me?

The princess of Guardia, off on an adventure to get away from her overbearing father and see the world. Full of hope, energy, and optimism, Marle may not be the brains of the adventure but she is most certainly the heart. Basically a Disney princess (because Disney princesses actually do shit). This role also doubles as Queen Leene, because the two of them are the spitting image of one another (due to being in the same family line.) Preferred Range: Mezzo-soprano.

  • You must live in this town. I came to see the fair. Awfully boring wandering alone, though, isn't it? Hey, why don't we walk around together for awhile? Wouldn't that be great?

  • My name is really Nadia. My father's King Guardia the thirty-third. I just wanted to go to the fair and have fun like everyone else! But if you'd known who I really was…

  • Enough already! I'm a princess, but what's that mean? I can't do anything special. But you—you're incredible! I'd trade my name for your genius in a heartbeat!(Line 4 - As Queen Leene) I thank you, Crono and Lucca, for your aid. Please, accompany us to the castle. You will be most welcome guests.

A brilliant inventor from the modern day. She and Crono have known each other for a while, and have a brother-sister relationship (that could be more - Crono’s more interested in Marle to be fair). Witty and flippant, Lucca is easily the brains of the party, inventing or figuring out ways to travel through time and save the world. My scratch tracks give Lucca a German accent, but an accent is optional when auditioning for the character. Preferred Range: Soprano. NOTE: Lucca’s Theme, because it goes so fast, is one of the most challenging songs in the musical.

  • Crono! I was wondering when you’d show up. No one wants to try my telepod. Would you be so kind?

  • Anyway, I call these distortions "Gates." They're basically portals to the same location in a different time. But Gates are unstable—that's why they appear and disappear all the time.

  • Well, some of us don't like it when people are so formal all the time. Isn't that right, Marle?(Line 4) Oh dear. This is kind of hard to say, but I think something awful happened while you were out. I…I don't think anyone else is left.

A loyal knight from the middle ages, cursed to have the head of… well, a frog. Wants to be a hero, but ultimately his heart is against violence for violence’s sake. Comically serious, and a general badass. Preferred Range: Baritone.

  • Lower your guard, and you will allow the enemy in!

  • It was my presence here that endangered the queen. I can remain at this castle no more.

  • My name is Glenn! Long have I carried Cyrus’ hopes and dreams, and now I bear the Masamune as well! Henceforth, I claim them as my own! I shall slay the Fiendlord Magus and restore our honor!
(Line 4) (Attracting a prison guard) Alas! My belly button! It is in such pain! (Guard gets knocked out) Fool. Frogs have no belly buttons.

  • What happened here? This dome contained many humans and others like me.

  • That matter of speech could cause offense. I am incapable of offensive speech.

  • There is nothing left for me here. I want to help you. Together, we might be able to give the life on this planet a chance.

As such, she’s willing to beat the hell out of anyone in their way to help them save the future - just as soon as her world is saved from the Reptites. Preferred Range: Alto-mezzo.

  • You! You different… but strong, too! (“That’s because I am a robot.”) Raw… boot? WHAT THAT? No rubbish or Ayla head go boom!

  • Listen Ayla! We make new friend! Strong man, Crono! Crono friend, Robo, Lucca! Now, dance bobonga!

  • Ayla alive, Ayla fight! Win, live. Lose, die. That rule. No can change rule. Old man breathe, but dead inside!(Line 4) Lavos… Ayla people word. “La” mean fire. “Vos” mean big.

  • Hmph! What’s the matter? Are you not going to try your luck?

  • Ah, that frog of so many days ago. How have you fared since last we met?

  • Again, the bitter black winds begin to howl… very well! Come, if it is death you seek!

Lavos is a parasitic alien life form that landed on earth millions of years ago, and in the year 1999, destroyed the planet as we know it. In the game it doesn’t talk, but in the musical, it has three voices. This one is an airy, higher voice, likely to be the one with the most diction (as the others are bass or just plain weird.) Preferred Range: Soprano-mezzo.

This role will double as Schala.

The daughter of Queen Zeal, and princess of the Kingdom of Zeal, Schala possesses intense magical power. She is, however, filled with remorse and doubt, caught between the need to serve her mother and the desire to protect the people she cares about… or even bystanders. She’s nice like that.

NOTE: Lavos’ battle themes involve singing really fast, and belting, and as such are among the most difficult in the musical.

  • (Lavos) The pattern has repeated itself more times than you can fathom. Civilizations rise, evolve, advance. And at the apex of their glory, they are extinguished.

  • (Lavos) Your words are as empty as your future. I am the vanguard of your destruction. This exchange is over.

  • (Schala) It's an amulet containing my prayers. If something should happen, it will keep you safe. I wish I could remain with you always. But Mother has other plans.(Line 4) (Schala) The last of my pendant's power will send you to safety. I know you will not be able to forgive her, but… Please, do not hate my mother, or our kingdom.

  • Oh, you've come to see me! Well, by all means, have a look at my collection. Could I interest you in a weapon? I'll give you a special price.

Preferred Range: Tenor/Baritone

  • (Yakra) This man is a seditionist who meant to overthrow our kingdom. His execution is in three days. See that he is still here to attend to it.

Recommended Range: Baritone-tenor.

  • It is not a question of where, my friends, so much as when. This is the End of Time. Travelers lost in time's flow turn up here, much like driftwood on a beach. Might I ask when you are from?

(For reference, when testing out for this, one person lowered their voice by 12 semitones to get that deep.) Preferred Range: Bass. NOTE: Lavos’ battle themes involve singing really fast, and belting, and as such are among the most difficult in the musical.

Preferred Range: Baritone-bass.
