By the sea
Project Overview
SYNOPSIS
Inspired by Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers, By the Sea is a short
animation about the quiet magic hidden inside the worst days. A
young man rushes to a job interview — his résumé flies out the
taxi window, his phone is left behind on the seat. He takes a
stranger's vespa to chase the taxi, only to be wiped out by a
banana peel thrown from the very cab he is chasing. The chain
reaction sends him tumbling through a clothesline, across a
trampoline, over rooftops with an umbrella, and off a tree onto a
clifftop — somehow, with a stray dog in tow. What looks like
total disaster quietly turns into something else: the dog belongs
to an old shopkeeper who happens to need a new employee, and the
shopkeeper's daughter turns out to be the taxi driver who started
it all. Everything, somehow, lands exactly where it was meant to.

Role: Protagonist (Ismail)
A young man in his twenties, rushing to an important job interview in his life. He is optimistic but a bit clumsy, with rapid emotional shifts-from nervous anticipation, to frantic scrambling, to complete breakdown, and finally, relief.

*Say [rushed, a little exasperated] Allô, Maman— oui, oui, j’arrive. [sighing, half-patient] Le CV est là , je n’ai pas oublié. T’inquiète pas. [quick, affectionate but ready to hang up] Bisous, salut.
[low, dread sinking in] …Mon téléphone. [desperate, full volume] ATTENDEZ — ATTENDEZ !
[frantic, straining] Arrêtez-vous ! Mon téléphone est sur le siège arrière !
A warm-hearted old man who runs a small grocery store by the sea. He speaks with the ease of someone who has lived a full, unhurried life — fond, a little weathered, quick to laugh. His most pressing concern right now is his missing dog.

[overwhelmed with relief, voice breaking] Mochi ! Mochi, viens ici—! [tender, scolding through tears] Où t’étais passé, petit caché… J’étais tellement inquiet.
[warm, gently amused] Entre, mon grand. On dirait que t’as couru depuis la ville.
[surprised, amused] Tu l’as trouvé près du séchoir ? [fond, shaking head] Ce chien… il trouve toujours les pires cachettes.
