Project Overview

Welcome to the Bungo Stray Dogs: BEAST Fandub (Vol. 1) Casting Call!

Here’s everything you need to know about this project:

What is Bungo Stray Dogs?

BSD is a supernatural series about select humans with "gifts" or special abilities they use in combat against their rival groups. Each character is named after a classical writer back in the day, and their gifts are all references to their well-known stories. Bungo Stray Dogs follows the protagonist, Nakajima Atsushi and his role as a new member of the Armed Detective Agency, who use their abilities to protect the innocent. However, rivaling the Armed Detective Agency is the Port Mafia, with intentions to use their special abilities for less charitable reasons. From there, Atsushi finds himself frequently battling against the gifted Akutagawa, who, despite being a formidable opponent, never achieved his many goals that which Atsushi had already found himself reaching.

BEAST vs. Bungo Stray Dogs?

BEAST is a role-reversal story-a hypothetical one, if you will. Opposite to Bungo Stray Dogs Original, BEAST positions Akutagawa as a new member of the Armed Detective Agency, with Atsushi as a member of the Port Mafia. Akutagawa (and really Atsushi as well) is a considerably tragic character, who often resents Atsuhi for all the things he has in accordance with the original Bungo Stray Dogs storyline. What happens when Akutagawa has instead been placed in Atsushi's position under different circumstances, and Atsushi in Akutagawa's? How will things defer from the way they are in the original story?

What am I auditioning for?

This audition will be for Volume 1 of BEAST. Depending on success and actors' willingness to reprise roles, future volumes may be dubbed as well (as well as additional casting calls for the necessary volumes). There’s no official English dub of BEAST, so this project aims to make one ourselves! Please be aware of the potential need to reprise roles for additional manga volumes, so a sense of commitment will be asked of you. Additionally, there is some degree of gore and violence (as well as necessary screaming), so do be aware of mature scenes such as those.

About auditioning:

-Got a minor role but wanted something better? Don’t worry! I will keep you in mind and reach out you if needed. We are doing multi-casting, so you may get more than one role!

-MUST be 13 years or older. If you are younger than 13, message me on CCC, and I'll try to work something out.

- You can audition for multiple roles!

- This project will stay open until the series has ended. If it continues onto the other volumes, then more roles will be added.

-Minimal background noise and you do not need a mic

- If you get the role, I will message you afterward through Casting Call Club messages, but I’ll need an alternative way to reach out for efficiency. (Preferably Discord)

-Be ok with potential retakes!

- You will be required to have discord because this is where everything will take place.

-Have time management skills! I will be flexible, but I will have set turn-in dates for lines when the scripts are ready. Communicate with me if you have issues for some reason and we’ll go from there

- If you did not get a role, I'll DM you to see if you want a different role.

  • Very important

    A few months ago, I had to cancel this project, much to my disappointment. My mother has health issues and I have to help take care of her and recently I started the new school year and I have been feeling very burnt out.

    I was planning on posting the first chapter at the end of July, but to be honest, I just haven't been motivated at all, especially since I'm not into BSD as much anymore.

    I'm not sure when I will be posting the chapter, but it will be posted eventually. This project has been a lot harder than I had anticipated and just very difficult to keep track of everything.

    I have no plans as of right now to start any new projects, and if I did, then it would be very small.

The story’s lead protagonist…although he suits the category of anti-hero better. In the original story, Akutagawa was one of the Port Mafia’s most formidable fighters, though striving to impress his former mentor, Dazai Osamu, who’s approval he could never seem to obtain. Though he still maintains a tragic backstory in BEAST, he role-reversal entails him as a new member of the Armed Detective Agency, learning under Odasaku. Now his one and only goal lies in finding his sister Gin, who, to his surprise, has become a member of the Port Mafia. Akutagawa has a hostile, however tactical personality. His voice should be low and husky, as though he’s threatening even his allies despite no genuine intention to do so.

Nakajima Atsushi

Originally the main protagonist in the series, Atsushi remains as Akutagawa’s primary rival, but has now been positioned as the main antagonist. Atsushi was notably insecure and timid in regards to his abilities in the original series, and this has instead been used as his motivation for his position as the villain. His fear is what motivates him to kill and hurt others, being that he can’t be afraid if he destroys that which scares him. Atsushi’s voice should be on the softer side, hiding a fearful innocence beneath his intensity and bloodlust.

Originally a reformed member of the Port Mafia and then member of the Armed Detective Agency, BEAST follows the storyline of a Dazai who never left the Port Mafia and eventually became its leader. Just as cunning and mischievous as before, Dazai still has a somewhat-lighthearted tone of speech, despite how inappropriate it is for his line of work. For those of you who are familiar, recall the “hearing a smile” skill from Beauty and the Beast. Whether sinister or genuinely lighthearted, the actor portraying Dazai should do their best to portray some kind of smile through the character

Originally a member of the Port Mafia alongside her brother, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Gin’s disposition hasn’t changed much from the original story. Having suffered a difficult upbringing but still maintaining loyalty to her brother, Gin now finds herself separated from him as a member of the Port Mafia, unsure or unaware of what’s become of her brother. Despite her difficult history, however, Gin still has a more gentle and soft-spoken tone of voice has before, but with more notable urgency.

Short-tempered, however, fiercely loyal, Chuuya’s character role has been practically turned on its head. Originally Dazai’s partner in the Port Mafia turned primary enemy after the matter’s conversion to the Armed Detective Agency, Chuuya is now forced to remain at Dazai’s side as an underling to the leader of the Port Mafia. Despite every intention to kill Dazai and make his get his comeuppance, for now, he is simply forced to grin and bear it while following Dazai’s orders. Chuuya should sound snarky and annoyed. Don’t be afraid to throw in some growls or groans-his voice is very animated in the original series.

A well-intentioned, however tired man. It was his friendship with Dazai and resulting death that convinced the latter to leave the Port Mafia. Now unaware enemies, Oda maintains a fairly comfortable position within the Armed Detective Agency, while also having been the one to recruit Akutagawa. His voice should sound calm and assured. Though he takes everything quite seriously as needed, he also relaxed his muscles so as not to stress himself out.

Though well-intentioned, he’s a bit of a stickler for rules-often trying to instruct Akutagawa to the best of his abilities, only to find that Akutagawa is more comfortable using less conventional methods. Kunikida should sound firm and reliable, but possibly a bit too strict as well.

While his role is fairly similar to the original story, his relationship with Akutagawa is noteworthy. His original connection with Atsushi stemmed from their more light and casual personalities in comparison to the many oddballs at the agency, but with Akutagawa, Tanizaki seemed to connect with him over their intensity. Though Tanizaki is oftentimes just as awkward as before, he has an intense love and care in regards to his sister, willing to hurt anyone who should come her way without a second thought. Likewise, Akutagawa has an intense commitment to his sister as well, and they share a mutual understanding of doing ANYTHING (yes, even murder) in order to protect her. Tanizaki’s voice should sound relatively friendly and casual, but the actor should be capable of displaying an intensity with this tone when necessary.
