Black Market Brawl: Prelude - Tabula Rasa
Project Overview
Deep underground in a hidden marketplace, dozens of the most ruthless, cold-hearted, and dangerous individuals to ever set foot in the Kingdom of Symphony are called to action. To edify mischief, to inspire vice, to propagate malice… for whatever reason, dozens of individuals have traveled to the underground trading city of the Din, eager to participate in the newly arranged Black Market Brawl.
Some, however, come with different motives.
Some are even victims of circumstance.
Black Market Brawl is an audio drama project, and a production for the Black Market Brawl OCT contest. Here is the introductory comic for the event itself. (No, I did not draw it, the comic is the work of the hosts/judges and their affiliates.)
This series follows a mysterious pyromancer called Chanté entering the underground city of the Din so that he may carry out a mission for the good of the world. By chance, he encounters a sweet little girl called Seon-a who is in the possession of The Diabology, a dangerous book of incredible power. Now he must protect her from the evils of the book while searching for his target, but can he really do that when many of the people around them are so hellbent on killing him?
Each episode of this series will be publicly posted on YouTube.
IMPORTANT!
This is an UNPAID casting call.
Please make sure the audio uploaded is a mono WAV file! It will be much more convenient if you can leave 3~5 seconds of space between each audition segment for the character.
You are free to audition for more than one role—in fact, for minor and extra roles especially, this is highly encouraged, as this increases your chances of being directly contacted for a more prominent role in a later episode.
Some of the lines you are auditioning for may not be lines that will appear within this episode.
While not required, it is preferable that you have a Discord account for voice chatting purposes. Some sections of the script may require rehearsal with others.
AUDITIONS CLOSE AT: JUNE 1ST.
The cast will be finalized by June 2, and the script for this episode will be distributed to them immediately afterwards. Tapes for the first episode are expected by June 9.

LINKS ARE NOW WORKING PROPERLY!
I have just discovered that the final link was leading folks to the same document as the FIRST link. The issue has now been dealt with! The final link now has a more detailed summary of where the story will go along with a Q&A page.
A youth who was granted a blessing from phoenixes at a young age, and remains in their employment to protect multiple planes of existence. For one who wields fire and holds passionate beliefs, Chanté is a very amicable individual, approaching others with a gentle yet charismatic air. Most would find him very easy to warm up to. It's rather difficult to infuriate this young man… one might even say he is kindhearted to a fault. He is reluctant to share details about himself for fear of endangering others, but he seems to have a spot spot for children. Though not a complete pacifist, he prefers avoiding conflict, especially the direct and combative kind. How unfortunate that he must fight here. How unfortunate that he is skilled at fighting.
Accents best suited would be standard American, mild English, or mild French.
(reassuringly)
Nonsense. The dust is hardly a bother.
(frantic, thinking)
I knew something was wrong here by the very nature of the place, but to think I’d have to confront it this directly! I have allies far more suited for this! Was there no one else that could’ve been sent?!
(Please sing a verse of Scarborough Fair. Any version or key works.)
You are not quite a character, but you play an important role in this story nevertheless. You are the one establishing the tone, the one who informs others of the people involved and what makes them tick. Though the narrator's lines tend to be centered around describing characters, it is this way for good reason.
WARNING: You will have a LOT of lines, most of them coming in paragraphs' worth. This first episode especially has a narration section that spans across 2 pages.
True power is when one walks like a place has no effect on them. Their steps are not measured according to how safe the land around them seems, but by how quickly their thoughts come to them. Their glances are not prompted by the ostentation of architecture, but by wonder and curiosity in its history and functions. Their movements are not influenced by which people they are in the presence of, but by which situation they find people in. Their hesitations are not related to their urge to remind what they have brought to others, but to their impulse to discover what they CAN bring, for good or not.
One look at the walk of Chante Ferrandin, and all those observing can tell: here is a young man of true power.
The nature of Chante’s work means there is much he knows, even of things he dearly wishes he could unlearn. The Diabology under his arm is not something he can claim intimacy with, but it is familiar nonetheless… in a distinctly uncomfortable manner.
The Butcher of Cowards is a titanic jötunn who sits upon the Throne of Spines within his coliseum, the Butcher's Pit. There, the mightiest of the Din battle for honor & coin. He speaks in a strangely jolly tone for a man who kills people for a living. He is supportive of anyone who has the courage to lift a weapon. He believes there is strength beyond physical & that all strengths have a place in battle. He runs the Pit out of the hope that it will uncover a warrior strong enough to finally kill him in glorious battle. Legends say that the Pit was the first building in the Din, a hole in the ground where Butcher challenged the world's champions, and that the Din was simply built around him. He’ll be well informed of every battle taking place.
The listed accent is "Viking", but standard American works too. You may have few lines within the first episode, but you are listed as "Minor" instead of "Extra" due to your role and presence in the overall story.
(thinking, surprise that turns into intrigue)
Hrm? What is this I sense? …It cannot be. A flame straight from Múspellsheimr? No… this force is far purer than any ore smelted in one of those forges! All the power that the Æsir would war over, all the health that the Vanir would bargain for, sealed within a single vessel… who has come walking into this Din. Oh, yes, I know who you are, young Gestr.
(shouting, almost roaring)
HEAR ME, YOU WORMS!
(making an announcement)
I bring you another challenge! New warriors who’ve yet to prove they deserve glory arrive in droves, and in their midst is one I KNOW holds promise—I herald now the arrival of one with the strength to kill me most honorably! Let it be known to all… “THE MASTER” IS HERE!
An oddity heralded to the Kingdom of Symphony by Queen Eliza’s challenge. She is an unknown force that has taken up residency in the Din and has quickly climbed the ranks of the local drug trade and now rules as their anvil queen. She is often giggly and lighthearted, which strikes fear in those that know the insane acts of violence she can commit to those who get in her way. If you’re looking for a quick fix she’d be sure to have it, otherwise it’s best to stay on her good side or out of her way.
You may have few lines within the first episode, but you are listed as "Minor" instead of "Extra" due to your role and presence in the overall story.
(pleasantly surprised)
Shut up! You’re serious?!
(giggling up a storm)
Wow, this place really might just get fucked the fuck over, huh?! Hell, if this is all true, I could be that fucked too!
(ready to rumble)
LISTEN UP BOYS! There’s gonna be one HELL of a party starting soon, and we’re not missing it for THE WORLD!
Many adventurers hail from humble beginnings, small villages people wouldn't spend more than a momentary glance at—and that—is where the call to adventure is born. Buddy the Shepherd was born to a large family coddled within the Kingdom of Symphony. He decided to travel abroad and see as much of the outside world as he could, alongside his village's prized cattle—a sheep named Nate, evolved past the simple mind of an animal using the magic of the village. They travel in pursuit of adventure and ways to ensure their village's safety.
You may have few lines within the first episode, but you are listed as "Minor" instead of "Extra" due to your role and presence in the overall story.
(reassuring yet eager)
Easy, Nate. What is it, boy?
(thinking aloud)
Huh…? Catalyst’s mark? In plain sight? That can’t be right. They said it only shows itself like that when it’s exposed to magic. If it’s still glowing, then someone’s gone through, someone with enough magic in them to… oh, NO. So all that talk’s REAL?! Nate, you thinking what I’m thinking?
(trying to calm someone else down)
Woah, woah! Settle down, we're not here to finish you off. I've just got a lot to ask… if you're who we think you are, anyway.
A cunning warrior related by blood, Cassius is Queen Eliza’s cousin from her father’s side. During the 1st year of her reign, he offered his assistance as a black knight for the royal army so he could get closer to her & attempted to steal the throne. His plan ended in utter failure & he fled the castle as a wanted man. While on the run, he came across a band of thieves, defeated their leaders in combat, and took control of the band for himself. Now residing within the criminal underworld, Cassius hopes to have his revenge & take the kingdom from Eliza’s hands one day. Perhaps the participants of the brawl can serve as allies to help achieve his goals.
You may have few lines within the first episode, but you are listed as "Minor" instead of "Extra" due to your role and presence in the overall story.
(interested)
And you are certain?
(calm and sinister)
My, my. It seems fortune smiles down upon me at last.
(affably)
It appears I have underestimated your intellect, child. Is this guardian beside you a tutor of yours?
The Deliverer of Hounds is a vicious wolfman who once belonged with the royal knights, but lost his mind in the bloodshed. A wanted man in the kingdom, he now lurks in the Sump Quarter, the most uncleanly & sleazy of all the alleys in the Din. His shop distributes "counterfeit delivery hounds", whatever that means. He often speaks of his time in the knighthood, claiming he was the right-hand man of King Bravo himself, but historians say otherwise. He speaks in third person and often bargains for items & goods rather than take money. He is extremely unstable & speaks to himself in growling mutters. If you need something deadly for this brawl, seek him out.
You may have few lines within the first episode, but you are listed as "Minor" instead of "Extra" due to your role and presence in the overall story.
(grumbling with vexation)
Fecking mutts, Deliverer of Hounds has taken care to feed mutts, now you are rowdy. Grrr… shouldn’t be. You wants talk with Deliverer, you better be heard, rrrrr.
(disbelief)
Deliverer’s hound smelt WHAT in the air?
(Please record your best mad cackling.)
The Vassal of Coin is an oddity. He is a strange fetal horror controlling a body made of brass. He is the manager of the House of Scales, a large bazaar complex that houses hundreds of shops, and does so out of his hookah lounge, the Mistral. Though nobody actually knows who leads the syndicate Catalyst, it is speculated that Vassal may be the one running it. None can be sure. When speaking business, the Vassal is straightforward & stern. He does not care for pleasantries & lollygagging when there is coin on the table. Otherwise he's absolutely cryptic & speaks in uncertainties. He is cold, calculated, and always chasing goals of power & money, despite having both. The Black Market Brawl could either be beneficial or a serious threat to his profits. Should it be the latter, it would be well-advised not to engage in battles near the House of Scales.
Please be aware your voice will go through a filter. You may have few lines within the first episode, but you are listed as "Minor" instead of "Extra" due to your role and presence in the overall story.
(open contemplation)
To be a vassal is to swear fealty and render all homage possible towards those they serve. And towards coin, I show due reverence. But many a vassal, on principle, is loyal to not just their nobles, but the king or queen that rules over their own masters. I wonder, then… if I shall see the face of royalty at last.
(with intrigue and perplexity)
A knight-errant wanders into where chivalry and mercy have been laid into their unmarked graves, and seeks a vassal with values that cannot negotiate with his own. You do not come looking for a lord of your own. No… too much purpose, too much power, too much potential. To some other court, you already belong.
(harshly)
Do not trust. Do not listen.
A woman of the past. But whose?
You may have few lines within the first episode, but you are listed as "Minor" instead of "Extra" due to your role and presence in the overall story.
(enraged)
HOW DARE YOU?! YOU ALMOST KILLED HER!
(calm, cool, and collected)
Remember. You are the messiah.
(annoyance building)
We've been preparing for weeks. Six. Weeks. And it's suddenly no longer safe to dispatch any agents towards that dimension because of WHAT?
A researcher who answers to Mari. This one is, presumably, ranks as an intern.
(struggling to keep someone restrained)
Professor Seong, please calm down!
A researcher who answers to Mari. This one has had a long relationship with her, a reliable friend or partner.
(stern but civil)
Everything went as it should, Mari.
A citizen of Harmonica in the Kingdom of Symphony.
(exasperated)
And you believe that?! The gods-damned rumors they feed us these days!
(gasping in awe at the sight of a peculiar passerby)
Oh, fuck, a bastard.
A citizen of Harmonica in the Kingdom of Symphony.
(optimistic)
Now, now, it’s not completely baseless! You see how well off Aita’s been since she closed that deal. We could easily be just like her, I think!
(whistling after a particularly fetching passerby)
Yoohoo~ pretty boy~!
A citizen of Harmonica in the Kingdom of Symphony.
(taking notice of a newcomer)
Or just like THAT guy over there.
(laughing in mild amusement)
Look at that man STRIDING!
A jeweler on her way to sell her wares that runs into Chante.
(starting to panic)
No, it’s okay—oh, crap, I dropped all the—hang on…
(stunned and somewhat bashful)
Thank you. You’re… quite the noble man. No pun intended.
(hastily reassuring)
No! I’m just… surprised. It’s not often that people with business in this city really make small talk with us working folk.

GOTCHA!
(puzzled)
He doesn’t LOOK old enough to be a dad…
(skeptical)
You SURE he has anything to do with her, though? I don’t… THINK they look anything alike.

Hmm… Seon-a, you really don’t remember where this game is from?
(sniffing the air)
Do you guys smell that? There’s something smoky in the air…
(realizing with a start)
Oof, my folks must be looking for me.

Feels weird making the not-fox out of all of us the fox…
(groaning)
Oh, come on!

Who cares, humans are really hard to tell apart. They all look the same!

(chill and matter-of-factly)
Relax, it’s only a game. Besides, the fox is one of those wild ones, not a beast folk.
(sniffing, catching on, and noticing someone)
I smell it too! It’s coming from over th—Hey, is that your dad?
(disappointed)
I think any more fun has to wait. Look at the time.

Hey, I think it’s fun! It’s been a while since we had anything new to play.
(in protest)
You can have young dads!
(deciding to speak up)
…You know that’s racist, right?
A participant in the Black Market Brawl that meets an unceremonious demise while distracted.
(shouting in alarm before sudden death from a throat blow)
You! Don’t just stand there! It’s kill orRHKH—
A participant in the Black Market Brawl out for more blood to spill.
(like a predator ready to close in for the kill)
You. You’re looking mighty soft. You’re next.
(interrupting)
TOO BAD!
(frustrated)
HEY, GET BACK DOWN HERE!
One of the thieves of the Din that serve Cassius. This band in general is surprisingly not too keen on joining the brawl—dead folks can't spend their fortunes.
(slightly teasing)
Oh, PLEASE don’t play hard to get. We’re on a tight schedule, and we really don’t want to have to follow protocol.
(thinking, observing and realizing)
His hand… that mark… it’s… This can’t mean—?!
(reporting, mildly unsettled)
Yes, Your Majesty. When he embraced the child, the mark upon his hand… it glowed. It is as rumor says…

(flatly)
You’re seriously gonna pick a fight with a kid right now?
(clearing throat to dissolve awkwardness)
Uh, new deal, dude. You can just give us the ring, and we’ll be outta your hair.
(patience being tested)
For the nth time, yes, that’s what she saw. Now, good stuff. Stat. Pretty please.

C’mon, do it th’ easy way. We don’ wanna hafta hurt ya.
(starting to intimidate)
Yer REALLY lost, aren’t ya, little girly? Ya don’ even have any idea what’s goin’ on down here.

Just hand over that book—looks like it’ll be worth something. Seriously, what hide is that thing bound in? It sure looks weighty!
(snappily)
Well, YOU'RE not doing anything.
(thinking, trying to maintain composure)
This. Is. So. Cute. I miss my big bro.
(reporting calmly and with reverence)
It is true, milord. The marks of Catalyst are being forced out of concealment.
