Project Description
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a 2D animated fantasy drama set aboard a 19th-century whaling vessel. The story follows Josephine, a deaf sailor who forms an unlikely bond with the very siren her captain is determined to destroy. Through themes of empathy, belonging and found family, the film explores what it means to challenge prejudice and choose compassion in the face of fear.

Captain Murdoch is the obsessive and commanding captain of a 19th-century whaling vessel, driven by a relentless pursuit of a mythical siren. Charismatic and fatherly at first, his growing obsession slowly transforms him into a paranoid, manipulative and ruthless leader. We are seeking a strong, authoritative voice with excellent emotional range, capable of portraying a compelling antagonist whose descent into obsession ultimately leads to his downfall.

Josephine (Vocalizations Only)
Josephine is the courageous and compassionate deaf protagonist of the film, communicating entirely through sign language. This role does not include spoken dialogue and instead focuses on expressive vocal performance through breathing, effort sounds, reactions, laughter, cries, pain and emotional vocalizations. The actor will work closely with the animation team to bring Josephine's emotional journey to life through authentic, nuanced nonverbal performance.
