Batman: Year One CANCELLED MOVIE Script Reading Podcast
Project Overview
We are putting together a fun little project in which we are taking the script for the cancelled movie BATMAN: YEAR ONE and recreating some of the scenes as an audio drama. This script was written by legendary comic book writer Frank Miller - adapting his own comic book. It was set to be directed by acclaimed indie filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. The script is super dark and gritty and takes some wild liberties with Batman and his mythos.
Some of the casting top picks were also pretty unusual and we are looking to create a fun little 'what if' audio drama seeing what the film would have been like.

This is Jim Gordon early in his career, before he was Commissioner Gordon. The actor Aaron Eckhart was the top choice for this role. Ironically he would later go on to appear as Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight in 2008. Jim is the co-lead of the movie and is a cop slowly unwrapping a police conspiracy within Gotham PD. He becomes more and more paranoid as the film goes along. He is a good guy to the core but is having his faith tested.
Harvey. I've got a hunch. After we spoke, I got to thinking about the CAMPBELL murder. He was killed INSIDE one of ESTRADA's cathouses, just before the vigilante appeared. And ESTRADA's prostitution ring has been hammered by the vigilante.
The guy's slippery and he's getting better. Doing bigger and bigger criminals. He's changing his M.O., using a random pattern so we can't catch him. And he's been working on his disguise. It's... TRANSFORMING.
My office was ransacked. They were at my apartment too. Broke the locks, tossed the place. They tried to make it look like burglars but I think it was Flass and his crew looking for my file. They FOUND it and they TOOK it.
Selina Kyle is at the very beginning of her Catwoman career in his film. She starts the film casing people in a brothel and slowly begins robbing the rich and powerful of Gotham over the film. This leads her to get mixed in with Batman who is trying to take the same people down. Selina is described in the script as a young Black woman who is playful and always plotting something.
Whoa, slow down.
(starts to have fun with the situation)
I didn't kill that bastard. I just prettied him up a little. Nothing you haven't done.
(pouts, smiles)
I'm innocent. I didn't kill him.
CHI-CHI came in as I was marking CAMPBELL. HE killed him. Said the scumbag cop had taken enough of his money. He was going to kill me too. But HOLLY showed up. We fought. Right there on his cheek, I gave him a nice little something to remember me by and got the hell out of there.
I have this bad feeling that the only way I'm ever going to see you again is if I continue my life of crime. And, well, practice makes perfect, right?
This is Jim Gordons partner in the script. They only appear in the one scene in which they visit a few of Batman's victims in the hospital.
Good morning, sir. Three more came in last night sir. Down in the prison wing at Gotham Mercy. All three, admitted last night.
A connection between them all? You mean the mark of the bat?
