Animorphs #2: The Visitor | Cassie Recast + Melissa Chapman

Project Overview

This is intended to be a long term project where we go through the whole Animorphs series in audiobook form. While the first video came out almost 5 years ago now, I am now in a position to be able to continue working on this passion project for the foreseeable future, and want to make it a recurring series on my youtube channel. I am hoping to have book 2 out by the end of May at the latest. We've got almost everyone we need, but still require someone to recast as Cassie, since the first actress went radio silent, and Melissa Chapman, the main "Guest Character" of the novel. The first audiobook is embedded for you to listen to for reference to the previous actress for Cassie's voice.

Cassie is an emotional anchor to the group, and one who is most often the voice of reason. She is inquisitive, cheerful, and patient, while also being sharp as a tack and thinking outside the box. She works on running an animal rehab clinic out of her barn with her parents, and she cares deeply about her friends. She is african-american and as such I'd prefer to cast an african-american VA if I'm able to for her. I'm looking for a mid-range level, steady voice that can still be dramatic if the need calls for it. (This may include screaming, crying, and potentially sounds of pain.)

The lines below are direct excerpts from the book. Please ONLY say the lines in quotes. Any auditions that are slated or go off-script will not be listened to/considered.

  • Cassie gave me an encouraging smile. "It was dumb putting yourself in that position, Rachel. You need to be more careful. But still, I'd have paid my next ten allowances to see the look on that guy's face."

  • "I was just thinking how you look like the same old Rachel, but now you also have an elephant, a shrew, an eagle, and a cat inside you. That's four morphs. That's more than any of us." She looked thoughtful. "We don't really know very much about this morphing thing still. I wonder if there is a limit to how many morphs you can do."

  • But Cassie put her hand on Marco's arm. "Don't ever let any of this get in the way of spending time with your dad," she said earnestly. "He needs you. We need you, too, Marco, but your dad comes first." She looked at Jake, then at me. "There isn't much point in doing any of this if we forget why we're doing it."

Melissa is a friend of Rachel's, the narrator, who has grown distant over time due to troubles at home. Those troubles being that her parents are infested with parasitic brain slugs from another planet. But to her, it just feels like they've stopped loving her and she doesn't know why.
I would also be looking for the same actress to play Melissa's mother, since it would stand to reason mother and daughter might sound similar, and Mrs. Chapman only has a handful of lines in the book anyways, as compared to Melissa.
I'm looking for someone who could pull off a broody but emotional performance with a mid-to-high voice range for Melissa, while also able to be more emotionally closed off with a mid-range voice for her mom.
Please ONLY READ THE TEXT IN QUOTES. Any auditions that are slated or that go off script will not be listened to/considered.

  • "What's going on with me?" she echoed. For a moment a look of extraordinary sadness darkened her eyes and tugged downward at the corners of her mouth. "Nothing is going on with me," she said. "We'd better get out there or Coach Ellway will have a fit."

  • "I don't know what I've done," Melissa said. It startled me to realize she was talking to me. Did she guess the truth? Did she know I was human? No. She was just a girl talking to her cat..."What did I do, Fluffer?" she asked again. "Why don't they love me anymore?"

  • [Mother's voice] Mrs. Chapman kicked my cage, like it was all my fault. "He doesn't have to win. All he has to do is wait until you are in a meeting with parents or members of the school board, then strike. They'll think you've lost your mind."
