Project Overview

Hi everyone!


As the name states, I'm putting together a Comic Dub from the Webcomic Always Human by walkingnorth. I absolutely fell in love with this series from the moment I finished the first chapter. It is currently available on WebToons, so go check it out! Give it some love. The plot, characters, and art are all outstanding. Hopefully, with this, I intend to give another dimension of life to the characters by finding what I believe are the perfect voices for them.

In the past, I have directed, produced, and even taken part in many dubs and animations. I even have a YouTube channel dedicated to posting some of my work. I'm still learning how to edit and mix better, so if you are cast please bear with me. I look forward to hearing all of your auditions!

What is it?


Always Human is a Sci-Fi story about two young girls, nanobots, and genetic engineering. It is set in the future version of Australia with various technological advances, including "mods." Mods, or modifications, can do things such as change your hair or eye color, or even improve memory or stamina. Using these mods have become the norm, so seeing people who do not use them is strange. Sunati, a protagonist of the story, meets Austen, the other, at a train station in the beginning of the story. Austen looks bland to Sunati, as she doesn't use any mods. Sunati soon learns that Austen has an odd immune condition called Egan's syndrome, which denies her the ability to use these modifications. When Sunati finally builds up the courage to talk to this mysterious girl, this is where the story begins.

As Sunati and Austen begin to get to know each other, Sunati is immediately love-struck. It takes Austen a while, though, because she finds out Sunati only talked to her because of her condition. Austen is a tough, brave girl when it comes to Egan's. She defends it, which makes this Slice-of-Life story seem less of a story and more realistic. It is precisely because Always Human is a Slice-of-Life story that it can't just forget Austen's disability when it is inconvenient. Egan's syndrome affects her life in every way. As the story progresses, both she and Sunati learn to fix their attitudes towards the issue, and begin to look at the world for how it is, together.

Not only does it feature a lovely queer romance and some fantastic art and music, but diversity of all sorts seamlessly blended into the story.

I will be posting this on YouTube! The comic uploaded to LINE Webtoons is currently finished, so the intended final product will be around 80 episodes. I will need the actors to send in their lines ASAP, so that we can get this content out quickly and efficiently. I am hoping to be completely finished by the end of this year. 

I did get approval from the original creator, so no need to worry about that!

Requirements


1. Please please please have a decent mic. I'm not talking about top-of-the-line, super expensive mics, just one that doesn't have a lot of background noise and/or echo. If you are in a place that produces a lot of echo, I suggest moving if you can or try to soundproof it as best as you can. This is simply to ensure that the audience has a tolerable experience.



2. Be appropriate and kind to others. Don't discourage others from auditioning or hate on their work. This applies just as well if you are cast, I just don't want anything to happen that we all could have avoided.



3. I'll be contacting you all via discord. It's easy and efficient, so you must have that. I will be contacting you with the server information once you are cast.



4. I will need you to get your lines in ASAP. I'm hoping to be finished by the end of this year. So please be active both in the chat and with your submissions.



4. You are welcome to audition for as many roles as you like! Keep in mind, though, I will not be double casting.




Deadline



I know the deadline says July 24, but I will most likely extend it depending on the number and quality of auditions. I only have the first five chapters ready, so when I finish the rest I will add more characters and opportunities to audition.

  • Casting & Deadline

    Hey everyone! Casting is going great so far, everyone has been so kind. I can't wait to start this project! But, I can't do that until all the roles have been cast! There are still a few left, so make sure to audition if you already haven't. I changed the description for Austen a little bit, because I decided I didn't really like the Spanish accent. If you already auditioned for her you can do so again if you'd like. As for the deadline, the project will end in about 5 days, so make sure to audition soon if you haven't already!

  • Hello Again

    Hey, I've decided to open the auditions back up for a little bit. The person who was going to help me with this project doesn't have time for it anymore, so in the meantime I will be getting everything ready myself while looking for another director/editor. If any of you are willing to help that would be absolutely amazing! Anyway, auditions are still open, so have at it!

    Hey everyone! I just went through all of the auditions. You all are amazing! I have a few people in mind who I would like to cast as the characters. However, most of you auditioned for more than one character, and i can't double cast! So, if you have not auditioned, or I commented on one of your auditions asking you to try a different character, please do! Also, tell anybody who may be interested. Thanks for reading!

  • Update!

    Hello everyone! There are currently 10 days left to audition, and I would love to hear all of your beautiful voices! In addition, thank you sooo much to everyone who auditioned already, you are amazing. I decided to add more characters, because I feel like I would need distinct voices for them. As far as the additional male/female voices go, I realized there are a LOT in the comic. I'll most likely be casting everyone who auditions for those roles, because not many people already have, but I need a large variety of voices. I advise you to audition for as many roles as you can. I would not suggest only going for the leads. I would love to incorporate as many of you as possible in this project. That said, good luck to everyone! Thanks for reading!

Sunati is a young woman who cares a lot about others. She is 22 years old and is in a relationship with Austen Avila. She has been raised in a society where mods are so common that she didn't even know there were people who couldn't use mods. This leads to some confusion with Austen, as she has this condition. When they first meet, Sunati sees Austen sneeze and offers a Hayfever mod, assuming that she can use them. She praises Austen for being so brave just for waking up every day and being able to live without mods. In the beginning, she blushes a lot when talking to her, but later gets more comfortable with it. According to Austen, she is "incurably honest." Sunati is best friends with Rae, whom she's known for a while.


I imagine her voice being medium/medium-low.

  • [Prologue?] There's a girl I see at the station sometimes, a girl I can't help but notice. It's not that she's got any fancy mods, it's just that she never changes. I first saw her four months ago, and she still looks exactly the same... I guess that's why I admire her, she's so brave. She must be very confident, to go for a natural look, and to stick with it for this long. I'm not brave. I don't even have the courage to talk to her. 

  • [Hyperventilating] Crapcrapcrap she's right there okay you can do this you've practiced at home just stay calm and say something you need to apologize prove tha-WAIT IS SHE COMING THIS WAY?

  • Bugger. I hate fluid dynamics. I wish i hadn't used all those focus mods last deadline, I could really do with one now. [thinking about Austen] Augh... this is impossible, I cant think straight.

Austen is an upbeat, 18 year old girl who falls in love with Sunati. She has an immune condition that denies her the ability to apply mods, or modifications, to her appearance or body. If it is an emergency, doctors are able to modify her, but only under strict conditions and long periods of time. She can be prickly and, unlike a perfect-world scenario, fights back when someone says something about her condition, This causes her and Sunati's relationship to derail a bit at some points, but like any relationship (almost), they make up. Throughout the story, Austen learns about patience and clear communication, but it's Sunati who realizes that her previous behavior was wrong and changes accordingly. She is still in school studying to be a geneticist because she wants to find a cure for Egan's (or at least shine some light on it). She finds school difficult, because she can't use any memory or focus mods. On top of this, she goes to the gym regularly because she finds herself self-conscious about her weight.


Her voice should be medium-high/high, but not too squeaky.

  • [apologizing] So about the other day... I have an immune condition that prevents me from using mods. I think I normally manage it quite well. But I had an essay due, and I was very stressed and sometimes, when I'm stressed, I do silly things, things like leaving my Hayfever tablets at home. And then sometimes, when I'm stressed and grumpy and sick, I do things that are even sillier. Things like taking frustration out on a Stranger. I've been feeling really bad about it I mean, you were just trying to be nice. I'm sorry.

  • [Out of breath} Sorry I'm late... how long have you been waiting? [...] Um, why are you staring at me? Do I have sunscreen smeared all over my face?!

  • [Sarcastic] Ha ha, you're hilarious. Look, I'll tell you what we're doing on Sunday, but then we need to focus, okay? Well, she said she likes bushwalking, so-- Tanos, you're not going to like this-- We're going out to lake Ar--

Rae is Sunati's best friend. They first met when Sunati was 12 years old, and her parents took her to Kaku City for the first time. She was waiting in line to use a new Virtual Reality lab when Rae started talking to her about how amazing the experience was. Rae is like a big sister to her, and is open to helping her with a lot of her problems. She is African American and asexual.


I imagine her voice being low but also motherly. 

  • [Sunati says: "Ahhh you did it!"] Yeah, I did. You were right, it's so worth it. Sure I blew my budget. But you can't put a price on looking this gorgeous! 

  • No way! Sunati, Sweetheart, that would be dishonest (don't you get it?). You're the type of person who likes new things, you like bright colors and sparkles and there's nothing wrong with that. This is who you are. Don't pretend to be anyone else. 

  • (Young Rae) My family's in Melbourne, but I don't mind moving. Some of the world's best VR artists live in Kaku City, and I'm going to be an archivist when I grow up, so I need to learn from the best!

Yasel is Austen's younger sibling. I'm pretty sure they're non-binary, although I can't be completely positive. They are quirky and energetic (and won't hesitate to barge into your apartment). You can do whatever voice you'd like for this character! I want to see your ideas. Try to make it as gender neutral as possible. 

  • [sniff] But it's a three hour trip, it'll be dark by the time I get home. And I'm just a small, sweet child, anything could happen to me!

  • [bursting into laughter] You're completely serious, aren't you? [dialing down the giggles] I can't believe this, are you an only child? I thought so, you're hilarious. 

  • And of course, the universe rewarded my selfless generosity by making everything turn out well as soon as I got here. Wow, I'm such a good person!

Dr. Karim is one of Austen's teachers. She is frank and direct and wants to push Austen,  but at the same time cares about her happiness. Her voice should be medium-low.

  • If you can keep this up, you'll have a far understanding of the prerequisites by the start of the semester. You're actually doing much better than I expected.

  • It's not as serious as it sounds. The dorm computers flag hundreds of students each year. And most of those students do perfectly fine on their own. If you were a normal student, we wouldn't even be talking about this. But you're not normal, so we do need to talk.

Davvi is Austen's other father. He's the smart one to Carlos' energetic. I imagine his voice being higher than Carlos.

  • Uhhh neither...? But in that last email Austen said Sunati works in VR design. and since Sunati's not a very common name, it just took a bit of research...
