Aberrant: a Horror, Tactical Rogue-Lite for the Blind and Visualy Impaired

Project Overview

Aberrant is a turn-based, tactical game designed for players who are blind or visually impaired, posing a simple question: What happens when you take the SCP Foundation, Supernatural, Delta Green, H.P. Lovecraft, and a boatload of folklore, fuse them together in the Cold War world of 1980, and present widespread anomalies as a new facet of daily life? The answer, it turns out, is a world obliged to adapt: a world where the dead are brought back to fight on behalf of the still living, where printed manuals on lycanthrope hunting are a formalised military publication and where a literal international project is afoot to develop warheads to sterilise the moon from extraterrestrial entities. It is the world of Aberrant.

In Aberrant, an apocalyptic unravelling of reality follows a failed CIA experiment under Project MKOFTEN. This leads to creatures, phenomena, and entities from alternate dimensions, distant space, or fractured timelines spilling into our world with disastrous results. Players manage a licensed paramilitary corporation tasked with containing these threats—recruiting operators, researching anomalies, and deploying into top-down tactical missions inspired by the deep simulation of Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead and Dwarf Fortress. From clearing out fae creatures terrorizing British suburbs, to stepping into unstable portals leading to exoplanets, to wrangling the occasional Palaeozoic beast dumped into our timeline, Aberrant features a vast array of missions rooted in cosmic horror, regional folklore, and inspired by more than a few fishy friends.

The game relies entirely on audio, as it is built specifically for the blind (with the potential for graphics later down the line). Aberrant is in its early stages; the engine is largely complete, and I am currently working through a public-facing introductory demo.

What I am recruiting for as of now are diverse voice profiles for the randomly generated characters the player will command and interact with. Characters will be assigned vocal skins upon generation, requiring localized barks for reloading, spotting hostiles, and general matters of this sort. Because this game lives and dies on its audio, submissions with poor microphone quality, noticeable room echo, etc, will be rejected immediately.

That being said, actors will not be rigidly bound to a script. A baseline script will be provided, of course, but you are highly encouraged to inject real personality into the role. Want to invent lines for a cynical veteran? Go ahead. Want to play a soldier driven by fanatical religious motivation? Be my guest. Proposed ad-libs will be vetted by me to ensure they fit the lore and tone of the rest of the game, but creative ownership is welcomed. This is a collaborative effort, and I want your voices to help build a world where the hardest promise to keep is: ‘See you on the other side.’

I am a solo developer building this as a pure passion project—doing it for the love of the craft, and the satisfaction of translating a dream game into a playable reality.
