[From a journal] “I have spent many lifetimes in service of this land and kept it safe from invaders. Now, with the last of my strength I’m barely able to concentrate long enough to write these words. I suppose the villagers are right; I’m the enemy. “I drink blood but I’ve no choice. That is my punishment. I drink the blood of those who have not yet fallen from God’s grace. The moment I’d become a vampire, I’d forsaken God when I rejected His plan for me.
