After Theo “betrays” the orphan gang, Gene goes with Cyril and Enos to find a new home and becomes a pilot. He holds no resentment towards Theo, and still cares for him. He even offers to help Theo escape Cyril's plot for revenge. He worries that his past with Theo has become a heavy burden on him. Gene regrets not being able to help Theo back when they were an orphan family and even as an adult.
