Notes on Delivery
- Vigilantes is a dark, serious, semi-realistic game about a group of mostly ordinary people taking a stand against organised crime. It is not about superheroes, so please keep this in mind when deciding upon your delivery.
- A good delivery of these lines will be serious, engage the listener from the first word until the last, be consistent, will do justice to the character, capitalise on interesting parts of writing, and be nuanced.
- We'd like a compassionate delivery of the lines. Edgar is a good guy with more serious problems than most. He's not a monster, not a vaudeville villain, and although extremely eccentric and sometimes unintentionally funny, he shouldn't be considered a figure to be made fun of.
- Accent wise, a Boston accent, like Leonardo Di Caprio in “Shutter Island” might work well here, but this is not a strong preference. If this is not an accent you are comfortable with, please stick with something you can work with consistently.
- If you'd like to get some ideas, you could try searching for audio recordings of “A Tell Tale Heart” by Poe, but balance these with the above notes.

Character Introduction [To be voiced]
Nervous? What, with the low, spectral moon watching me through the unfinished roof's wooden ribs, and the jerry can juddering in my grip, and the scent of gasoline in the air?1 Yes, very nervous!
I stopped. Or maybe something stopped me. I chuckled. Chuckled deliberately. Deliberately, though at what, I can no longer remember. Set about splashing petrol onto wood and waist high masonry. A match snagged the abrasive patch, and before I could set it to task, my fingers gave way. I watched, mesmerised, as the twisting devouring thing I had created swept toward the derelict house.
Still and nervous. I remained still and nervous as I took in the blaze, probing myself for the tingle of pleasure that would damn me. While I noted that fire has an aesthetic all of its own, my appreciation was purely intellectual, like that of a connoisseur for a pretty painting, not visceral, not emotional, and thus I was saved.
I chuckled again, more heartily this time, for I had once more proved, through rigorous and scientific experimentation that I was not a pyromaniac.
Note1 This is a long, complex sentence (sorry!). Consider slowing down at complex parts, or adding small pauses to give the listener time to process the words. Also, be alert to the risk of about running out of breath, which may make your voice sound strained.
