In this fandub, the visual novel's protagonist will be referred to as “Hikaru.” He serves as the player's avatar, the game's narrator, and the subject of the Literature Club's affections. For the sake of user friendliness, he is not programmed with any kind of unique personality in mind, instead fulfilling the archetype of the generic high school loser often seen in anime: awkward, emotionally reserved, sarcastic, self-deprecating, disinterested, spaced-out, blunt to the point of rudeness, and, of course, utterly clueless as to how to properly talk to a girl. Only at crucial moments in the game does he display any kind of extreme emotion.

I'm looking for a medium-low voice that constantly sounds bored, irritated, cynical and sardonic. Some good references include Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad.

  • (narrating
in a bored, exasperated tone) Why
do I let myself get lectured by such a carefree girl? More than that,
I'm surprised I even let myself relent to her. I guess seeing her
worry so much about me makes me want to ease her mind at least a
little bit – even if she does exaggerate everything inside of her
head. The school day is as ordinary as ever, and it's over before I
know it. After I pack up my things, I stare blankly at the wall,
looking for an ounce of motivation. Clubs...
    Sayori
wants me to check out some clubs. I
guess I have no choice but to start with the anime club...

  • I
keep my hand still against Yuri's neck. She looks into my eyes. It's
an intense expression that I recognize from when she reads her
books... Almost as if she's lost in a daze, enveloped by her own
thoughts. She breathes gently, half through slightly-parted lips.
    (breathless,
    flustered) What
is happening...? Is it the aroma of the Jasmine oil giving me this
    dizzy feeling?

  • (lovingly)
Sayori...I love you. Those are my true feelings. So...there's no way
you could like me more than I like you. I should have realized it
sooner. But spending time with everyone at the club... Making new
friends... And having fun with you every day... It helped me realize
that you are truly the most important person to me. That's why I'll
accept any of your burdens. As long as we continue like this every
day... With you by my side... Then I know we'll both be happy.

This time I tried to borrow Kyon's impression, bored, but with some feeling to his speech, unlike Okazaki where's he's just bored. I hope this one is good enough! If any revisions need to be made, I will gladly do em'!

I appreciate your efforts, as well as your candor. However, I think my friend was a bit misguided when he gave you the advice about Kyon. You see, I didn't realize when I made this casting call that Kyon and Tomoya are actually quite different when it comes to their line delivery (I'm not terribly familiar with Melancholy, so I've only heard Kyon's voice a handful of times). That's why, when I posted the first update on the casting call, I emphasized that Tomoya was closer to what I wanted. I do want Hikaru to be rather flat, since that will correlate with the notion that he is a generic, bland high school stereotype who serves as a virtual vessel for the player. The whole point is for him to have so little personality of his own that the player, as well as those watching the fandub, can more easily insert themselves into that role. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not asking him to sound *boring*; if he just sounds like a robot, that's going too far to the other extreme. I'm just looking for him to sound like the typical teenage boy who doesn't give a crap about anything and likes to scoff and make fun of the world around him. You kinda get what I mean? (Sorry this is so long, I just feel like I need to further clarify my point, since most people who have auditioned really don't seem to understand :/)
