  • I've Casted Hikaru!

Hey everyone! I want to thank everyone again who auditioned for Hikaru; it was quite an interesting selection, and I think you're all very talented! But sadly, there can only be one primary actor and one understudy chosen, and with the help of the lovely ladies I casted for Monika and Sayori, I think I have made a decision that I am happy with. So congratulations to: Main: psycho81212 Understudy: DBGreece I'm so glad that this casting call received such a response from the voice-acting community! I can tell that there are a lot of people passionate about this game/project, so I do hope you will continue to follow the series on my YouTube channel, Emberilliance! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFjQL9FWYG7YAjfre9aGQcQ?view_as=subscriber Thank you so much again, and I wish you all good luck in your future endeavors! :D
  • Round 1 Casting Decisions + Deadline Extension

Heya folks! I want to express my gratitude to all who have auditioned for the project thus far; your excitement and passion for this project is inspiring, and it's really encouraging me to up my game and make this a really unique and wonderful fandub! Even for those who don't get cast, I want you to know that I appreciate all of your efforts, and I sincerely hope that you will continue to support the fandub when it comes out! You all have great potential, so I hope that you will also continue putting yourselves out there and working to hone your craft! :D Now then, without further ado, I present the four lovely ladies of Doki Doki Literature Club! NATSUKI: Jxnny (main), tsukikokaze (understudy) YURI: Emberilliance (sorry for plugging myself in here, but it didn't feel right to leave Yuri out >.>") SAYORI: Anayume (main), hiitskat (understudy) MONIKA: bearandrocky1 (main), tsukikokaze (understudy) Congratulations! I will be leaving individual comments on your auditions to notify you about your casting and give instructions on what happens next~ NOW THEN, in the case of Hikaru... Based on the auditions I've gotten thus far, I'm not confident that I can cast this role without sacrificing my own vision of the character's voice, so I'm going to leave that role open and extend the casting call for two more weeks. But that's the ONLY extension I will be giving, so at the end of those two weeks, I promise that I will make a casting decision based on the auditions I have. I realize that might sound harsh, but PLEASE don't take it personally. There is a very delicate balance that one must strike in portraying a character that is not only a generic avatar protagonist, but also a narrator; therefore, I want to make sure I come as close as I possibly can to what I originally envisioned. Anyway, that's all I have to say for right now. Congratulations again to those who were cast! I can't wait to hear from you! :D
  • One Week Left!

Hey everyone, there's only one week left before the first (and maybe only) round of DDLC casting ends, so I thought I would brief you a little bit on how casting will work: Like I mentioned before, I can be terribly picky when it comes to casting, often to my own detriment, so I have multiple people who will be helping me sort through these auditions. It will likely take a few days to discuss and decide, so the earliest you can expect the results to be posted is the 16th or 17th. The people I cast should automatically get a notification from CCC, but just in case they don't, I will also leave a comment on their auditions. Understudies, however, will be notified by comment only, so please do pay attention! Everyone will have one week to respond and accept/decline their role, or I'm afraid I will have to recast. We're in the final stretch, folks! I hope you're all as excited as I am! ^.^
  • Two More Weeks

Howdy folks! This is just a reminder that there are two weeks left until this casting call closes, so if you haven't done so already, be sure to submit your auditions/re-auditions before then! Also, I want to let you guys know something: just because the deadline is March 14th, that doesn't necessarily mean that the casting process is over at that point. I will extend the casting call if I feel that I still haven't found the right voice(s) for the character(s); I'm one of those people who doesn't like to settle if I think that I can find someone more suitable for the role. Now please, do NOT think that I'm criticizing your performances...you guys have demonstrated that you possess tremendous talent in voice-acting. But associates of mine will vouch for the fact that I am INSANELY critical and picky when it comes to casting for projects that mean a lot to me, so really, I write my own doom by having a perfectionist mentality. But please, don't let that get you down! I'm not perfect, so don't let my judgment discourage you. :) And one more thing: it would be REALLY helpful if you guys could share this casting call on your social media. I don't really have social media (I avoid Twitter and Instagram, and I haven't touched my Facebook page in months), and I'd really like to try and attract more actors to the scene. If it's not too much trouble, I would DEEPLY appreciate it if you could do this favor for me. Thanks so much, everyone~!
  • Hikaru

Hey guys! Based on the kinds of auditions I've been getting for Hikaru, I'm starting to get the impression that I wasn't clear enough on what kind of voice/tone I'm looking for. Therefore, I would like to post a clip of the anime "Clannad" that showcases the voice of Tomoya Okazaki (the blue-haired boy in the video). His flat, disinterested baritone is the voice that always came to mind for Hikaru while watching playthroughs of DDLC. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYu8xlWcs_c Since it's out of context, it doesn't really spoil anything significant about the show, so don't worry too much about that if you've never seen the anime. Just pay attention to the voice, and it might give you a better idea of what I'm looking for. And if you feel like re-trying your auditions, you're more than welcome to do so. I just thought I'd clarify that point, since a lot of people seem to be interpreting it differently...which isn't usually a bad thing, but I'm going to be rather picky about these auditions, so I want to make sure people understand. Thanks~!

In this fandub, the visual novel's protagonist will be referred to as “Hikaru.” He serves as the player's avatar, the game's narrator, and the subject of the Literature Club's affections. For the sake of user friendliness, he is not programmed with any kind of unique personality in mind, instead fulfilling the archetype of the generic high school loser often seen in anime: awkward, emotionally reserved, sarcastic, self-deprecating, disinterested, spaced-out, blunt to the point of rudeness, and, of course, utterly clueless as to how to properly talk to a girl. Only at crucial moments in the game does he display any kind of extreme emotion.

I'm looking for a medium-low voice that constantly sounds bored, irritated, cynical and sardonic. Some good references include Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad.

  • (narrating
in a bored, exasperated tone) Why
do I let myself get lectured by such a carefree girl? More than that,
I'm surprised I even let myself relent to her. I guess seeing her
worry so much about me makes me want to ease her mind at least a
little bit – even if she does exaggerate everything inside of her
head. The school day is as ordinary as ever, and it's over before I
know it. After I pack up my things, I stare blankly at the wall,
looking for an ounce of motivation. Clubs...
    Sayori
wants me to check out some clubs. I
guess I have no choice but to start with the anime club...

  • I
keep my hand still against Yuri's neck. She looks into my eyes. It's
an intense expression that I recognize from when she reads her
books... Almost as if she's lost in a daze, enveloped by her own
thoughts. She breathes gently, half through slightly-parted lips.
    (breathless,
    flustered) What
is happening...? Is it the aroma of the Jasmine oil giving me this
    dizzy feeling?

  • (lovingly)
Sayori...I love you. Those are my true feelings. So...there's no way
you could like me more than I like you. I should have realized it
sooner. But spending time with everyone at the club... Making new
friends... And having fun with you every day... It helped me realize
that you are truly the most important person to me. That's why I'll
accept any of your burdens. As long as we continue like this every
day... With you by my side... Then I know we'll both be happy.

Role assigned to: deleted42715

Natsuki is the youngest member of the Literature Club, a classic tsundere character who is quick to argue and treats almost everyone with hostility. However, through Hikaru's interactions with her, we learn that she actually is a spunky, energetic and fun-loving little cinnamon roll who loves manga, baking, bright colors and everything that is cute in this world. Her tendency to lash out stems from her deep frustration with everyone treating her like a child and nobody ever taking the time to truly listen to her, as well as her unstable relationship with her strict (and possibly abusive) father. The poems she writes tend to be simply worded and straight-forward, reflecting her disdain for literary elitism and serving as a foil for Yuri's poetry.

I'm looking for a relatively high-pitched voice, but one that sounds naturally high, not so high that we enter “Alvin and the Chipmunks” territory. Her tone is usually condescending and superior, with a lot of bite when she's really pissed off, and she stammers and stumbles a lot when she's nervous. However, during her more natural moments, I want her to sound really adorable, bubbly and energetic.

  • (seriously
    annoyed) Monika!
See what happens when you put the manga on the top shelf?! Are you
trying to kill your club members or something? Jeez! (grouchily) Oh,
and one more thing. It seems like your most recent club member is a
total pervert. So I hope you're happy.

  • (crying) No... I don't even care
that much... I'm just...having a really bad day today... (sob) I
didn't mean to take it out on you...I really didn't mean to!
Just...every day...is...so hard. I just want to...come to the club
    and... (quiet sob)

  • (laughs, excited) I totally forgot
that happens! Minori is my favorite character. You always feel
a little bad for her, since she's so unlucky. But it gets especially
bad when- (gasps) I shouldn't be talking about that yet! Just
    finish this chapter!

cast offsite

Yuri is the oldest member of the Literature Club, the dandere character who comes off as a quiet, socially awkward loner. Once Hikaru gets to know her, her love for literature and writing become more and more evident, and she reveals herself to be a passionate, sophisticated intellect who adores complex, volatile stories that can transport her to other realms. Her intense personality, strange hobbies (which include self-cutting), and tendency to act like a condescending know-it-all alienate her from almost everyone, leaving her with low self-esteem and very few social skills with which to make friends. That being said, she is relatively harmless...until the second act, when her personality shifts to the far more dangerous, insane and aggressively obsessive yandere archetype. Her poems tend to be extremely metaphorical and utilize more complex language, reflecting her love for highly visual writing and serving as a foil for Natsuki's poetry.

I (Emberilliance) will be playing Yuri in the fandub. In a short while, I will upload a sample so you can hear what kind of voice I will be giving her.

Sayori

Role assigned to: Giana Luna

Sayori is the Vice President of the Literature Club, as well as Hikaru's childhood friend. Out of all the characters in the game, she is the only one who seems to lack any kind of cruelness or cynicism. A genuinely sweet and gentle spirit, Sayori initially comes off as a mindlessly cheerful, klutzy ditz who gets easily distracted and loves going on adventures, serving as a foil for Hikaru's sullen and sarcastic nature. However, as Hikaru spends more time with her in the club, we gradually discover that she suffers from chronic depression and anxiety, brought on primarily by a crippling inferiority complex and her overwhelming desire to make others happy (at her own cost). What keeps her going is the hope that someday, things will return to the way they were when she and Hikaru were children...when the world seemed simpler and not quite as menacing. Her poems strike a balance between Natsuki's simplistic style and Yuri's metaphorical style, mixing whimsy and sadness to evoke a kind of bittersweet nostalgia.

I'm looking for a medium-high pitched voice that can convincingly convey a wide range of emotions, from childlike naivete to heartbreaking sadness, and from mischievous excitement to listless despondency. Except during her very darkest moments, her voice should always have a pleasant, lilting quality to it. When she's sad, think of it as a kind of “smiling through the tears” voice.

  • (moans
    in pain) Ow...
What was- (enraptured) Eh?? A-A cookie!? I-Is this a miracle?? It's
because I paid my restitution! N-Natsuki! That's so nice of you! I'm
so happy... (nomming, her mouth full) Sho good... Mmf-! (whining) I
    bit my tongue...

  • (sad,
    nostalgic) Why
can't it just be like it's always been? This is all my fault. If I
didn't get so weak and accidentally express my feelings... If I
didn't make that stupid mistake... Then you wouldn't have been
worried about me at all. You wouldn't have come here. You wouldn't
have even been thinking about me right now. Heh...but this...is just
my punishment, isn't it? I'm getting punished for being so selfish. I
think that's why the world decided to have you come over today. It
just wants to torture me. (bittersweet laughter)

  • (deep,
tortured sobs) No... Don't do this...to me... Please don't do this...
    Hikaru... I... (continues sobbing uncontrollably)

Monika

Role assigned to: bearandrocky1

Monika is the President of the Literature Club, the only member that Hikaru doesn't have the ability to court. Her exasperation with the petty politics in the major clubs at school led her to branch off and form her own; she demonstrates a true love and passion for the Literature Club and is genuinely invested in making it a success. She also seems to enjoy taking on new challenges whenever she can, as is demonstrated by her resolve to learn how to play the piano. Initially, her role in the game seems rather straight-forward: a friendly but detached third party who mentors the player, giving advice about how to woo the other girls, as well as helpful real-world tips on how to improve one's writing and boost self-confidence. However, as the game progresses, it becomes clear that Monika does indeed have her own agenda, as she starts to directly manipulate the game's story and mechanics in order to bring about the ending that she wants. But even though she is technically the “villain” of the story, one can still sympathize with her own pain and suffering, and her humanity does ultimately come through when it matters the most. Her poems are the most enigmatic of all the characters': while they are vibrant compositions filled with beauty and emotion, they are also so puzzlingly abstract that one has trouble deciphering the meaning until more context is added to her character arc.

I'm looking for a medium-pitched voice, just a little bit deeper and more mature than the voice we hear in the game's end credits. In the first act, her tone is that of generic friendliness, coupled with the encouraging helpfulness of a teacher or mentor. However, her facade slips during the second act, and she becomes far more callous and dismissive towards the other girls, while being more overtly flirty and emotionally invested in the player. Even during the first act, there should be an undertone of disdain whenever she talks about the other girls, and her teasing should have a mild bite to it.

NOTE: If you audition for Monika, I encourage you to also audition for the End Credits Singer.

  • (in
    teaching mode) Here's Monika's
Writing Tip of the Day! Sometimes when you're writing a poem – or a
story – your brain gets too fixated on a specific point... If you
try so hard to make it perfect, then you'll never make any progress.
Just force yourself to get something down on the paper, and tidy it
up later! Another way to think about it is this. If you keep your pen
in the same spot for too long, you'll just get a big dark puddle of
ink. So just move your hand, and go with the flow! That's my advice
    for today! Thanks for listening~

  • (seriously)
Hikaru, I think you saw something earlier that you weren't supposed
to see. I didn't want to have to tell you this, but I don't think I
have a choice. It's getting kind of dangerous for you to spend so
much time with Yuri. I don't know why, but she seems pretty easily
excitable when she's around you... Which shouldn't be a problem in
itself. But when Yuri get too excited, she finds a place to hide and
starts cutting herself with a pocket knife. (amused chuckle) Isn't
that kind of messed up? She even brings a different one to school
every day, like she has a “collection” or something... I mean,
it's definitely not because she's depressed or anything like that!
(in a conspiratorial tone) I think she just gets some kind of high
from it. It might even be, like, a sexual thing... (uncomfortable
    laugh)

  • Phew...
things have been a bit hectic lately, haven't they? (sincerely)
Hikaru, I just wanted to make sure you're enjoying your time at this
club. I would really hate to see you unhappy. I feel kind of like I'm
responsible for that, as President... And I really do care about
you...you know? I don't like seeing the other girls give you a hard
time. (a little disdainfully) With how mean Natsuki is and
everything... And Yuri being a bit...you know. (chuckles
conspiratorially) Sometimes it feels like you and I are the only real
people here. You know what I mean? But it's weird, because in all the
time you've been here, we've hardly gotten to spend any time
together. Ah...I mean...I guess it's technically only been a couple
days... Sorry, I didn't mean to say something weird! (nervous
laughter) There are just some things I've been hoping to talk about
with you... Things I know only you could understand. So that's why-
    (panicking) Wait, not yet! NO!!

During the end credits of the game, Monika sings a song called “Your Reality,” which is basically just the game's theme song played on the piano. You can find the song, along with all the lyrics, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB8uF6uvz-Y You can choose to sing along to the piano accompaniment or just audition with raw vocals; I don't really have a preference at this time.

NOTE: If you audition for the End Credits Singer, I encourage you to also audition for Monika.
