The vault had no door... because doors are for places that expect to be entered. It hung in a fold of the heavens, wrapped in wards older than the cities below it, guarded by things that did not sleep, did not blink, did not forgive.
He went in anyway. Halfway across the lightless span, it went wrong. A ward woke that should have slept. The air turned to glass beneath his feet... and he did the only thing a great thief can do when the plan dies. He improvised.
