Early 20s. A soldier who was a writer before the war. He is laid-back, soothing, and is selectively charming. As a closeted gay man, he is also constantly performing but is much better at performing it than Lawrence is. He gets along easily with others but reserves an intimate air of affection towards Lawrence. He wants the war to end so he can return to his writing and wishes to one day run away from the war with Lawrence.

The sides they read from:

  • I hope this letter has found you in the land of the living and not the land of the dead for if it was the latter I would have sought you there.

  • The amount of apologies that you speak of in your letter would have made another pair of eyes mistake me for shooting you instead of the truth.

  • Yes, I know the devil all too well, especially through the feelings you seem to express to me. Some fathers may even say your words reference a kind of affection that may tempt the devil, but I assure you the only person you are the tempting here is no one but me.
