Ever since fragging their unpopular and incompetent commander, Sergeant Lee Hofman and his squad have been deserters at large.

While the inciting incident may be excusable by their dire circumstances, Hofman and his band of renegades have since turned to banditry, both to keep themselves afloat as well as to showcase the futility of the NCR military's ongoing occupation of the Mojave.

By the time the player finds and confronts him, he has been reduced to little more than a cornered animal, holding a hostage at gunpoint in a rundown shack.
