Personality and Background

Colin is the central character of the fifth Trial: Sloth vs. Diligence. He’s a socially awkward manga creator who dreams of sharing his story with the whole world. Growing up in a small town, Colin was often ostracized for being different. Drawing became his solace, and eventually, his whole identity. Colin loves the world he creates and his characters above all else, and he works extremely hard to bring them to life. He rarely lets himself rest, always telling himself he’ll take a break later. He neglects his health, his sleep, and his relationships. But he’s unwilling to address it.

Colin is clumsy with people and struggles to express himself clearly (often in funny, awkward ways). He’s anxious, has subtle OCD-like habits (routines, “good luck” compulsions, dislike of change), and tends to spiral when stressed. But when he talks about his interests or his work, he becomes more confident and coherent. He can ramble for hours, completely enraptured.

Colin’s story explores the themes of purpose and identity vs. self-care.

Voice Type

Mid 20s. Chaotic but genuine and endearing. This is a highly emotional character who loses composure, “weebs out”, to the point it’s sometimes cringy. Tone ranges between: stuttering, flustered, and apologetic in social situations, loud and rapid-fire passionate when talking about what he loves, mumbling and deflating when anxious, frayed and exhausted in burnout moments.

Additional notes: It’s not required, but we encourage actors with speech impediments (e.g. stuttering) to audition. Also, we’d like Colin to sound distinct from the protagonist Grey. You can check out Grey’s voice here:

Audition Lines

1. Awkward and clumsy (can be stuttering).

Colin: Right. Yeah. Cool. I'll just… go crawl into a hole now. Metaphorically. Unless there's a literal hole nearby? No? Okay.

2. Loud and rapid-fire passionate.

Colin: NO NO NO you don't understand, the foreshadowing in chapter three pays off in chapter FORTY-TWO and when you reread it your entire brain EXPLODES because it was there the WHOLE TIME and (gasp for air) am I talking too fast? I'm talking too fast.

3. Anxious and spiralling (can be mumbling, can be funny).

Colin: What if the panel flow is wrong and nobody can follow the action and they just get confused and give up on page three and leave a one-star review saying I don't understand basic visual storytelling which is literally my whole job…

4. Frayed, exhausted, hint of despair.

Colin: You don't get it. This is all I have. And if I can't even do this right, then what's the point of me?

5. Sad, crying (don’t hesitate to go all in).

Colin: Please don't go. I'll be better, I swear, I'll be less annoying, just please don't leave me here all alone.
