Ira, the protagonist of ATARA, dreams boldly of becoming “the greatest pirate captain alive.” Determined to prove herself, she works hard to project confidence even when those around her question her abilities. Beneath her bright and bubbly personality, Ira is a teenager who yearns for the same things anyone her age does. Friendship, acceptance, and a place to belong. Compassionate and caring by nature, she often overthinks her words and actions, worried about how others perceive her. Her naivety and impulsive streak sometimes gets her into trouble, but they also make her earnest, unpredictable, and deeply herself.

Everyone who doubts me will be banished to the bottom of the ocean! Or something… Wait, no, that sounds way too mean! Uhh… they will be… forced to join my crew until I change their opinions! There. Much better.
(nervous but trying to act capable and confident) What do pirates steal? Well… I... don't really know. They steal something cool! That's what pirates do, right? You're probably good at that kid… Hey! Why don't you help me? But- we can’t just steal like... an apple; it has to be something meaningful! Something cool!
(panic and fear shifts to self soothing through belief that she's going insane) Hey! hey… you can hear me right?! Tell me you can! No…. No no no! This is crazy, this can't be happening! You're just delusional Ira! Yeah… you're insane!
