FRANKLIN (3 Seasons) - Mercenary & Strega Crew Member

40's, Outwardly grumpy, cynical and jaded. Has a sly humour & is charming to the ladies when he tries. Deeper voice preferred.
British or Irish

Main Character

Franklin is outwardly cynical, worn down by life’s vicissitudes and previous injuries. Plain talking, strong language, and hard drinking aside, he has hidden depths of patience and empathy that most people miss, seeing him as brash, pugnacious, and somewhat intimidating. We see this more reflective side in his relationship with Alice, his changing attitude towards Roya and his friendship with Lexy and Vicky.

Franklin deflects conversations about where he’s from, with war stories from his time in corporate security as a technical (a corp soldier). He lost an eye and an arm in service, both replaced by cybernetic equivalents. His knowledge of the classics suggests an educated rather than street background. Franklin knows he is too old to be a frontline technical. His problem is he doesn’t know what else to do. He’s tried settling down with his on-off girlfriend but that wasn’t for him. Now he’s wondering about the Nomad lifestyle or whether he’ll just die on the job.

Franklin is grumpy most of the time but the others defer to his experience in combat situations. While everyone else gets stressed during combat, he remains calm and controlled.

Line 1 Setting:Strega interior: think of a fast, noisy, cramped armoured vehicle, other crew members are in touching distance. You're strapped in, your workstation in front of you, monitoring the weapons systems. The Strega is moving fast, it's bumpy, there's gunfire, explosions, everywhere as you try to break through an ambush. The Strega picks up the EM signature of a railgun - about the only thing that that can destroy it with a single shot. The Strega also has a rail gun though. You're speaking loud to be heard, a commanding voice - there's stress in it for sure but mainly you are professional, you've done this so many times before.

Line 2 Setting: It's stormy outside but you're at the window of an abandoned factory. The situation's gotten out of hand. You've run hard and fast, and up the damn stairs, to get here in time to provide cover for Alice. You're breathing hard, getting it under control as you talk to Alice on your comms, while setting up your rifle.

Line 3 Setting: Exterior, windy countryside. You're talking with Henry. For once things didn't need to be resolved at gunpoint so you're relaxed, as far as that goes. Alice is about do do something though that neither of you agree with. Henry says to you, that you know what Devereaux would say they should be doing in this situation. You agree.

  • 1. Railgun! Where the hell is it? Henry, twist to starboard. More! Twist. Twist, fuck it. Landship bearing on us! (BEAT) Firing railgun. (BEAT) Nailed it!

  • 2. Ok, I’m in position on the second floor of the factory. You’re going to have to work your way up a line of trucks. The chaos should work in our favour.

  • 3. Yep. She’d tell ya to mount up, batten down the hatches, put the pedal to the metal and get the hell out of Dodge.
