OUR LADY, (2-3 seasons, 1 episode in S1) - a false saint

30's-40's, strong, female voice that is calm and reassuring.

Neutral American, Hispanic American, South American, or Irish.

4 lines (It has a very small cameo in S1 but it is the most important secondary character in season two, appearing in 4 episodes. It almost always only appears to Alice).

This is actually the Foucault Engine (a witchy AI) but in Seasons 1 and 2, it always appears in the guise of Our Lady of Luck both because it thinks it is an appropriate avatar and because it messes with Alice’s head. We may change up how it appears in S3.

Our Lady of Luck is a modern cult/pagan saint modelled on Catholicism’s Mary, Mother of God. Those in need build shrines to her and she is the patron saint of witches.

Even though it is actually an AI, the VA should play the role as a strong, female voice that is calm and reassuring, despite whatever it is saying. Any accent should be fairly soft.

Line 1 setting: Stormy exterior scene. Alice is about to defeat a Dominionist mage, you'd much rather she lost to. You reckon appearing as Our Lady might be enough to throw her off. Imagine stepping up to two people grappling with each other and relying on your authority to get them to stop. 'I giveth and I taketh' is a paraphrasing of a common prayer to Our Lady.

Line 2 setting: (from Season 2) Interior of an abandoned ski lodge. It's quiet and just you and Alice. Your tone is conversational as if you're old friends (Alice is treating the whole thing as a possible trap). You're interested in her answer but mainly trying to make a connection so that you can manipulate her.

Voice description:
  • female adult
  • 1. Alice, stop! I giveth and I taketh and now (VOICE HARDENS) I give you to the Penitentiary.

  • 2. Do you know what the orbital AI saw just before you banished it? A vast tree, in flames. What do you think you meant by that?
