Hi, Shaun. Thanks for reaching out. Your voice honestly sounds perfect for one of the parts potentially. I’ll describe the character briefly then include a little portion of the script for you to test read if you’re up for it.

So this character will be living in the apartment in roughly the year 1905. His name is Charles Arlington. Imagine one of those 19th century British explorer types, the guys that would venture off into an unknown jungle and try to map some unknown territory or contact some unknown peoples. Burly, courageous, proud. Now imagine this type of guy, but he’s grown too old to adventure, he’s in his 70s now, and all he has left are the memories of his past life. He’s lost all meaning in his life, he’s disconnected from his kids and family, he’s struggling financially, and he’s drinking more than he should.

I’ll post some of the script here for you to do a reading from. In this scene, he’s in the apartment with another man, they’re both looking at a lions head mounted on the wall, he’s into great detail of the day he encountered this Lion, eventually it’s revealed that the man he’s telling the story to, is just a repair man, and he doesn’t care about the story, and only wants to get his payment for his repair.

I’ll post the full excerpt here for context, but free to only do a reading of the text I put in bold.

“Arlington:

The air had an arid musk to it that morning, I was a young man of 32 in the best shape of my life and even I felt the oppressive weight of the Angolan sun beating over our heads. Africa was no place for the timid men in those days. My guide trotted 3 paces ahead happily humming one of his grandfather's ancient melodies and suddenly… he froze in place. All the noises of the savannah exhaled all at once and only silence now remained. My vision sharpened, the only thing I could perceive to be moving were the tiny hairs on the back of my guide's neck standing in readied attention. Sometimes the environment you’re in becomes aware of danger before you do. The 10 bore rifle I always had with me on such exhibitions weighed heavily in my hands as my eyes scanned for any disturbances in my periphery…Three, maybe four, maybe five heartbeats passed.. And suddenly a roar.. a crackling, monstrous roar, reverberated through the air. It hit my chest before it hit my ears and I felt its awesome ungodly power shake every crevice of my body, it bellowed through my organs, contracting my veins and arteries, nearly dislodging the cartilage from my very bones… My vision remained frayed and fuzzy for several seconds, and as I forced it by sheer will and gile back into focus I saw there standing before me, with all the majesty of mother Africa herself, this beast. Snarling, jagged, blood stained teeth, heavy rasperous breathing, eyes glazed with both a dead emptiness and the sharpened agility of an apex predator.. I could see its musculature contracting in all the spots required for a pounce… he was preparing to strike. I gripped my weapon, rooted my boots into the soft Angolan sand, channeled my fear into focus and ceased breathing… He leaped forward and….

Repair man:

Uh sorry Mr. Arlington, sir, I really have to be going, I have another client that’s expecting me. I just need the payment for the sink repair… With service and parts, it should come to about 7 dollars. Would you like to pay cash, or will it be billed to the building?”

Thanks!
