Perry once told me, “Lois, a reporter lives by three rules. “Believe none of what you hear. “Half of what you see. “And everything you write.” I’m a reporter. Or a “newspaperman” as Perry would put it. A damn good one by anyone’s standards and mine are pretty high. I like Perry’s rules. They make sense to me. Strike that. They made sense to me. Because now those rules fall under the same category. It’s all “B.S.” “Before Superman.”

One night, Jimmy and I were working the graveyard shift, getting out the last edition; “The Bulldog” as Perry would put it. We were bored and tired and we tried to figure out how much Luthor makes. Our best guess? One hundred and fifty dollars a second. In other words, if Lex Luthor found a hundred dollar bill lying on the street… …it wouldn’t be worth his time to pick it up.

There isn’t a day when I don’t think about Perry’s three rules. And even though a “Superman” flies in the face of them--literally-- -- as long as I believe everything I write, I’ll sign my name to it: “By Lois Lane.”
