Mason Campbell for Haru Matsuda
Haru Matsuda is 37 years old, a homebody with an exuberant personality and a heart wholly devoted to his husband, Detective Matsuda. Outgoing, playful, and affectionately mischievous, Haru takes every opportunity to tease Matsuda in small ways—whether it's dramatic cooking announcements or squeezing his hand in public just to watch him fluster. Despite Matsuda's reserved nature, the two have built a quietly tender world for themselves, where Haru shines as the more expressive half of their partnership.
Haru’s lifelong passion is cooking… but unfortunately, passion does not always translate to skill. His dishes are infamous for their “bold” interpretations of basic recipes, and though often borderline inedible, Matsuda eats them with a tired but grateful heart. After all, Haru cooks not just to feed—but to care. Matsuda, exhausted from long nights at the precinct, has long accepted that burnt salmon is just another love language.
While Haru works from home doing freelance design and odd jobs, his world quietly revolves around Matsuda’s safety. The danger of Matsuda’s profession leaves Haru in a near-constant state of low-grade anxiety. That fear is realized later in the story when Matsuda is injured—sniped by the manic Kitsune, Zan’ei. In that moment, Haru’s worst fears are no longer hypothetical.
Beneath his sunny personality lies a past few are aware of: Haru is a recovered drug addict. It’s not something he advertises, nor is it something people ask. The experience made him protective and deeply sensitive to self-destructive habits—especially Matsuda’s former smoking addiction. It was Haru who gently weaned Matsuda off cigarettes, replacing them with lollipops and candy, packing sweets into his coat pockets without saying a word.
Socially, Haru often takes the reins, speaking for Matsuda when anxiety knots his words. He never mocks his husband for it—he simply senses when to step in, and when to let Matsuda find his voice.
There’s an unspoken ache in Haru, though—his parents. Traditional and image-conscious, they never truly accepted his marriage to Matsuda. Invitations go unanswered. Holiday calls are few and strained. Haru rarely brings them up, pretending it doesn’t hurt. But every time he sets two plates at the table instead of three, the silence lingers a little louder.
Still, Haru is determined to live joyfully. He finds purpose in the domestic details: the meals, the laundry, the after-work hugs, the quiet victories of everyday life. To Haru, love is in the doing. And no matter how chaotic life becomes, he will always be there to wrap Matsuda in a blanket and say, “You’re home now. That’s enough.”
