[Bitter and desperate] Curse this wretched fate! Born to nothing, raised on scraps, whilst lesser men inherit kingdoms! [Clutching the lamp] But here... here lies my salvation. That fool merchant knew not what he sold - babbled of spirits and wishes like a madman in his cups. [His eyes gleaming with avarice] If but half his tales be true, then I shall rise above them all! BARTHOLOMEW: [Slamming his fist on the desk] Immortality then! Wealth, status, and eternal life!
BARTHOLOMEW: [Long pause, staring at his reflection in a mirror - seeing the uniform, the medals, the stranger he has become] [His voice changing, becoming quieter, more human] I... I have spent my life thinking only of myself. Coveting what others possessed. Despising those I deemed beneath me. And now... now I shall lead brave men - better men than I - into slaughter. Men with families who love them. Men who never schemed for another's downfall. [Turning to face the djinn] For my final wish... I wish for the courage to protect those men as best I can. To think of their lives before my own safety. To die, if die I must, in such a manner that their sacrifice has meaning. Let me become... let me become worthy of the trust they'll place in me.
