While it was presumed that she had perished in battle a long time ago, she is revealed to have survived, and has merely been trapped in Subspace for some time. It is believed that her supposed death is what drove Bowser to the dark side. She is kind and caring, but her time in Subspace has drained her both physically and mentally.
