Class Session 1
Zae for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
You have a nice clear voice and it's pleasant to listen to. It's difficult to try and maintain that same energy when rushing the script. Using the text's punctuation for taking breaths could be incorporated in a second take. I really appreciate your use of emotion that made your performance lively. Great job Zae!!
I love listening to the other female-presenting voices do this script, because I feel like women are not often expected to speak loudly to a large group without being considered "harsh," or "pushy" (and I definitely struggled with this in my reading). I think you do a really good job of sounding like you're projecting to a group while maintaining a pleasant intonation. Definitely just take your time with it a bit more :) Overall a really great read though!!!
Don’t be so hard on yourself—it’s only the first week of class, and for the most part, you’ve already identified the areas you need to focus on, which is a great start. Self-awareness is a crucial first step in growth, and you’re clearly on the right track. Yes, your pacing was a bit fast in this read, but now that you’re aware of it, you can consciously slow down and take your time with the next script. Remember, pacing is an ongoing skill to develop, and each read is an opportunity to refine it.
One thing to keep in mind is the prompt about being in a gymnasium without a microphone. Visualizing yourself in that large, echoing space can really help you focus on how your voice carries. Picture the sound traveling around the room and reaching the people in the back. To achieve this, you’ll want to work on projecting your voice, which comes from using your diaphragm. By producing a strong, supported breath behind your words, you can ensure they carry with clarity and authority. While you’re already projecting well, incorporating regular breathing exercises will help you build the stamina and control needed to project even more effectively.
For a script that involves a long list, like this one, adding variety is key to keeping it engaging. You can experiment with changes in tone, volume, and pacing to create a more dynamic performance. Try emphasizing specific words or phrases to draw the audience’s attention to key points—this not only breaks up monotony but also helps to convey the importance of the information. These small adjustments can make a big difference in maintaining your listener’s engagement.
You also did a solid job with your enunciation, which is essential for clear communication. However, as you mentioned, be mindful of sticking to the script verbatim. While a little ad-libbing can be fine in some cases, it’s important to demonstrate that you can follow the script as written, especially in professional settings where accuracy is key.
You’re making great progress, so keep practicing and building on what you’ve learned so far. You’re already showing a strong foundation, and with continued effort, you’ll see even more improvement. Keep up the good work—I’m excited to see how far you’ll go!
