The narrator should sound British, weathered, as if he/she had been through a few fights him/herself. Gender does not matter here, as this role is open to either.

  • My mother worked in a book store in a less developed part of England. She absolutely loved working there, because she adored the books that were sold there. There were books of untold adventures, books of love and romance, and books that made you scratch your head, wondering how it was going to end. This bookshop was small, but it was filled to the brim with gems of a bygone era, soon to be replaced by electronic, hand-held devices that would be too complicated to understand. Reaching another stoplight on the road, I rolled down my windows, and turned to see that the Gallardo had stopped next to me, windows also down. I stared at Travis for a few seconds before noticing that in the seat next to him was a fiery redhead. She looked innocent at first glance, but then I got a closer look, and I saw that she was almost exactly like Travis. The only difference was that instead of tattoos and piercings, she wore way too much eyeliner and dressed almost entirely in black and purple. She was missing a single tooth from the top row of her teeth, which indicated that she was a hothead who’d picked a fair few fights in her lifetime. Travis, knowing that I was right next to him, called out my name. I didn't acknowledge him the first time he called; despite the fact that the bookstore went out seven years ago, I was still angry with him. But he was being persistent, and I didn't like it one bit.

The one thing that I noticed about Charlemagne was that she was fiercely loyal, sticking by my side like a trained war dog. It was interesting, to say the least, because while most of my other friends tried to mooch off of me, Charlemagne ripped throats open when I was threatened. To me, that's the kind of person I would want to have on speed dial when I'm in a pinch. I smiled.
