In the novel, Cooper is described as Monte's "brother" and "best man in [Monte's] wedding, if [he] ever had one". He is ambitious, goofy, and a bit of a jokester, but knows how to be serious with the time begs for it. He has a small crush on Lety Harris, who does not feel any sort of attraction to him despite this disclosure.
