Mrs Reed is Jane's aunt and she looks after Jane at Gateshead. Mrs Reed is cruel towards Jane, offering her little happiness and punishing her relentlessly. Mrs Reed idolises her children, John, Georgiana and Eliza, making them selfish, egotistical and arrogant.
LINE CONTEXT:
Lines 1 & 2: Mrs. Reed hates Jane and is bitter that she was left to her. She is attempting to admit her into a charitable school to get rid of her, and also to protect her reputation.
Line 3: Mrs. Reed is on her deathbed and has sent for Jane. She still hates her deeply but is tormented by the fact that she hid the knowledge of Jane's uncle in Madeira from her.

Instruct the teachers to keep a close eye on her, and to guard against her worst fault. She has a tendency to deceit. I would caution you not to be fooled by her lies.
I should wish her to be brought up in a manner suiting her prospects, to be made useful, to be kept humble.
