Green Lantern Audio Drama
kody mcgrath for Rot Lop Fan
Rot Lop Fan is the main character of the story. He comes from a region of space in which there are no stars and as such his species never developed eyes. When given the ring to join the Green Lantern Corps he had no ability to understand the concept since both Color and Light meant nothing to him. As such the concept had to be translated to his understanding so in place of light we have sound and in place of color we have tone. Thus making Rot Lop Fan the only F Sharp Bell.
This story takes place years after Rot Lop Fan has joined the corps and he is very much a skilled veteran member now. But events in the first act cause him to feel doubt and our story follows him from there.
Rot Lop Fan is incredibly talented and has a unique perspective on the Corps. He is smart and compassionate. He cares more about his fellow man than he does about himself. He is genuinely curious about others and polite to a fault. However his heightened senses of sound touch and smell can make interacting with others somewhat difficult for him.
The voice for this character needs to have something more behind it than just good line delivery. A sense of novelty in what I'm hearing will help with getting the part. What exactly that novelty is I can't say, I just need to be impressed with your ability to be odd but still deliver lines in a way that is emotionally impact-full.
Given the amount of both dialogue and monologue that Rot Lop Fan has in this story this will be a very demanding part and require a large time commitment from the actor. So please keep that in mind when auditioning. Given Rot Lop Fan's unique biology my sound designer and I are going to want to add effects to the voice track to create a sense of extra sensation behind the voice. We want him to sound like his voice is also used for echo location. What this means for the actor who plays him is that it's entirely possible you will do a fantastic take of a line but we might not be able to use it if the effects can't work on it. So again commitment is a huge thing for this role.
Another thing needed is the ability to just do weird things with your voice. There are two specific moments in the script that call for odd noises. One to quiet down a crowd and one to make a sound as if keeping a sense of time. These moments can be found on pages 9, & 25 of the script for further detail. Please include attempts at these noises in your auditions.
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that." (delivered in a determined bad ass action scene kind of way)
"In Loudest Din
Or Hush Profound
My Ears Catch Evil's
Slightest Sound
Let Those Who Toll
Out Evil's Knell
Beware My Power:
The
F-Sharp Bell!" (This is Rot Lop Fan's oath, very different from the
standard Green Lantern oath since allusions to light and day/night time
have to be removed. Should be said in the same way as a sacred pledge,
meant to inspire.)"I didn't know the moon was here until after I left the ship to
collapse.! I had the ship eject it's pods and wait for me. Tell me Bzzd,
do you think you could travel three light years with over a hundred
escape pods on only point 5 percent power?" (Lot of emotion and anger
here, but anger directed inward at his own sense of failure)
