Penny's mom, Mary Hooper, has been through a lot. her oldest son Alex died overseas in some small military operation not on anyone's radar. She hasn't quite been able to handle it, falling into a pattern of depending on Penny to do everything, and when Penny begins to rebel, she brings her in line with threats about how the stress could kill her. She is also highly religious, frequently dropping guilt on Penny with Bible quotes. She also, inexplicably, makes cookies all the time, storing them in a closet, just in case the military folks are wrong about Alex, and he shows up at her door someday.

(a swat teams has burst into the Hooper home and mom is losing it) Calm down? Why should I calm down? You people come in here like you own the place for no good reason and you harass perfectly good people and there’s no reason .. no reason ... I ... uhh (faints)
