The Sergeant is an integeral part of the story - cool headed and having "seen it all before", he guides Jim, the new recruit and the other watchmen who make up Brickchester's worst line of defence through the mystery that unfolds.

  • "Oh don't worry about Hangman Harry, Jim, he just likes to HANG around here while he's waiting for work, although, the recent invention of gunpowder has rather killed off his business..."

  • (In answer to an excuse) "It's impressive, Corporal, as we dont ACTUALLY get buffalo in this part of the world..."

  • (Bemused questioning) "...The hat, Corporal? Explain..."
