Ackerman’s ambition to succeed intellectually stems from his childhood where his parents loved conditionally. He’s a scientist in BioTechnology, and Ester is suspicious that he’s “too good to be true” as a love interest for Hazel, who shares an interest in sustainable foods. Ackerman’s default position is stiff, a hardened exterior to match the wall he uses to guard his feelings.  As a scientist, he’s ruled by logic and reason. Emotions don’t usually play a part in Ackerman’s life, but that all changes when he encounters Hazel. 

He has an amiable nature under that gruff, un-smiling exterior. Deep inside lays the foundation of inter-conflicting personality traits such as wanting to portray himself as intelligent and yearning for the relationship he never received from his parents: something stable and not transactional. Because of this inner turmoil, he often comes out as solitary and quiet with the occasional corrective remark. Three words to describe him are observant, introverted, and inquisitive striving to remain cool around others.
