Kai is a supporting character in this project. He is rather quiet and cold in most times and first appears as the friend of a mean, popular, rich girl named Vienna Silvius (Vienna). Kai is indeed the most mysterious amongst the other members of the main team as he is the only one not human and his backstory is shown later in the series (possibly season 2).
