Director Alistair Vemhoff is passionately risk averse.  He is opposed to a procedure to resurrect the dead, is convinced to agree with an emotional argument, then adopts the I-told-you-so stance when things go awry.  He is intelligent enough to make an argument in opposition, but internally feels a bit inferior to and threatened by the other intellects in the room, even though he is the oldest member of the Foundation.
