For most of his life he was always the best on the training field that got him much appreciation and acceptance by others but a lot of that went away when Astrid was brought in as Cristine's squire. The competitive nature quickly turned into jealousy and hatred for Astrid because Marcus believes she has an unfair advantage for life with the natural given abilities she has on her side. Now Marcus finds any way that he can to tear Astrid down so that it creates an "even" playing field for everyone else training to be a night. Sometimes not noticing how far he is going to do this where it could permanently hurt her.

(upset/annoyed/trying to make Astrid feel bad) You could have helped us three hours ago with loading those crates but apparently you felt like slacking off today.
(lying/bullying Astrid) Who isn’t?! Lance and Arch just play nice because Liegh orders them to. I bet Cristine even gets frustrated with your constant campfires popping up all over the place.
