Sheriff Al West is the subject of an interview early in the podcast, during which he tries to convince Elliot to stop the investigation altogether. He insists that Elliot is only going to uncover trouble and hurt people if he continues with the podcast, even sharing a traumatic story from his past to try to convince him to drop the investigation. Throughout the podcast it is implied that he has secret motives that would make him want Elliot’s public investigation of the town to stop.

Look, I think you’re reading into this too much, kid. People have died here, yes. People have died everywhere, but making a spectacle of real trauma might not be the best way to represent our town, huh?
I think I made that pretty clear: trouble. Not everything is part of some conspiracy. Sometimes people get themselves into bad situations and wind up dead, and if you stir up too much commotion about it, you’re only going to cause more harm.
Look, I know you don’t have bad intentions, but you’re not doing us any favors by turning this town into a spectacle. Luis was a real person with a real family. A boy has died. Right now, his parents are grieving the loss of their son. At least wait for the body to get cold before you go turning his story into entertainment.
