Shade is one of the Maple Alliance heroes, and a Pirate legend.
Though no one remembers, he played arguably the most important role in saving Maple World last time round. In the most selfless act, he sacrificed his existence to prepare for the seal to seal away the Black Mage. However, nobody remembers Shade’s existence or what he did due to the nature of the seal. Reborn in Vulpes, he was helped by Moonbeam, a young girl of the Pointy-Ear Foxes. After becoming companions with and offered the spirit powers of Moonbeam, Shade returns to Victoria Island to find his friends. But he finds Evan who tells him Freud is dead. Shade vents his feelings of anger (because Freud did not mention him in his tales after the final battle) by "writing a letter to Freud", putting it in a bottle and dumping it in Gold Beach.
From there, throughout encounters with his friends, he isn’t recognised by any of them, until he discovers in the Lion King's Castle that he was wiped off from existence. Wanting to start afresh, Shade returns to Vulpes, only to find out that no one, not even Moonbeam, remembers him. He realizes that every time he crosses the dimensions he will always be forgotten by the people inside the dimension that he left. Shade finally decides to join with Aran and the Hero Alliance again, it is implied that he joined the heroes thanks to Freud giving him hope he’d promised to stay with him a long time ago. Hearing that Aran’s friend Lilian had been kidnapped by the Demon army, he goes with Aran to Slumbering Dragon Island to help rescue her.
Cult of Personality: Shade is one of the quieter heroes, having little to say but when he does it is always important. Shade carries a great deal of sadness and pain around with him, as a result of being wiped from existence and being forgotten by everyone after dimension hopping. Because of this, he is shown to be wise, loyal and patient. However he has learnt to suppress those emotions, and develops a strong and stoic demeanor. However, upon meeting Freud as a past-tense spiritual messenger, Shade does begin to well up with emotion as the Freud projection explains why the spell that would seal the Black mage required a sacrifice and erased everyone’s memory of him. And upon reminding Freud of his name, Freud says it’s good to see him again.
Aran is right. Whatever your decision, I will support it.
Afrien never gave in, even up to the very end. There are those who serve as the beacons of light for others, simply by the way they live their lives... Centuries ago, when Afrien and Freud first formed their contract, if was proof that the light of hope can still shine, even in the darkest of times... The dragon and it's master start to resemble one another after a time. Freud and Afrien were both possessors of honest souls... Evan, Mir. That is who your ancestors were. While the rest of us wavered, they never lost hope.
(Upon being recognised by Freud's holographic message) …Shade. It was a name given to me by a dear friend... (Being told it's good to see him) Freud...!
