Not much can be said about the Gatekeeper to avoid spoilers, however, the gatekeeper holds the other book which connects Erzia to Earth and they're using its power to have control over all of the lands.

Voice: I would love to see a variety of approaches, just needs to scream evil!
[They're observing from a crystal ball.] "Ah, so the prophecy repeats itself again. Let's see how far these pitiful mortals get."
[Speaking to one of his underlings.] "Have it done at once! If that boy gets anywhere near the garden they'll be one step further to us. If you do not stop him, it will be your neck on the line and I am not a merciful god. Don't forget our deal, your life is merely a toy to me."
