While historical, Liu Yan didn't meet Liu Bei personally, and in fact was in an entirely different location, the Romance of The Three Kingdoms places Liu Yan as one of the first nobles to meet Liu Bei. Liu Yan regarded Liu Bei as a nephew, and likewise Liu Bei regarded him as an uncle.
He doesn't appear long in this story, but Liu Yan tended to be rather cunning. Surprisingly, despite being related to the Imperial Han Family (The Liu Clan), he wasn't at all loyal to the Han Dynasty. Due to his short time appearance in this story, I won't be able to fulfill the vision I had for him. I had hoped to portray him in a more cunning, villainous nature, but having him sound benevolent and welcoming is acceptable as well.
“Ah! Colonel Zou Jing and Liu Bei of the Volunteer Force! I see both of you are safe and sound, and from quite a victory at that!”
“You both have my deepest gratitude. Come in, come in, you all need some rest after today. I will get a reward for everyone who participated in today’s battle!”
