It sounds like your using a noise gate I would recommend against a noise as it make the recording not feel natural with a sudden drop in audio and the sudden opening up as well. instead i would recommend noise reduction . It makes the recording sound a lot cleaner and is a lot more useful than noise gate

it takes a designated Sounds threshold and turns your Microphone on and off when ever it hears you speak. or hears loud enough sounds. and then when ever there is a sudden absence of sound it turns off. its great for VOIP (Voice over Internet Provider) software not so much recording software (audacity, etc) .

so you were essentially doing noise gate the long way. next time you audition for something try using noise reduction once you get the noise profile you want to reduce it actually takes everything with in that designated profile and reduces it or eliminates it While leaving that amazing thing that is our vocals pretty much in tact
