Jamie is growing up in a traditional household with an overbearing mother and attends a private Catholic school. Their mother expects them to be the perfect daughter, but Jamie identifies with neither of those things. As a result, they spend a lot of time ruminating in the mirror over these expectations, from both their mother, school, and society as a whole.
When Jamie leaves for college, they relish in their newfound freedom and find comfort in being themself. But something about the mirror still haunts them.
It’s time I stop trying to live up to my reflection. The next time I look in the mirror, I want to see myself
I’m still discovering who I am and dealing with people who won’t accept that, but my new friends are amazing. They don’t expect me to be anything other than myself. This is the first time in my life I’ve felt so validated.
What, and give up my life? My freedom? No way! I worked so hard to be who I am today. I’m finally starting to like myself. I’m starting to like what I see in the mirror.
