I thought I might keep a bit of the voice of snake in there, maybe a little bit raspier, and add some more emotion to him, I mean, he may be a war veteran, but that doesn't make him emotionless.

True, but you still see that in his face a lot at the mention of boss.
Emotion i mean.
And mgs's voice acting is kinda notorious by some people of being bad, it coulda been that snake was originally intended to show a little more emotion in his voice, and rather he was also meant to have a bit more dynamics to his voice rather than being quite a bit monotone throughout the whole game.
