She's a level headed, motherly figure. However, her strained relationship causes her to re-focus that anger onto her son. Matt seems disconnected from both his parents though they both try hard to do the white picket fence thing. She is a lawyer so she expects her son to make smart choices with his goals for life and from a young age, Matt seems to remember her mostly telling him how being like her will make him more successful than anything else.

Sometimes, things don't always go the way we want them to. No matter how much we wish for it. But that doesn't mean you have to stop believing in something.

I really like your mother tone. It's clearly someone who has a sense of being in charge. In fact, I'd like it if you applied more of that authority into your inflection.
