Hello, and thanks for your audition! This particular interpretation isn't quite what I'm looking for for this character, however. The ideal is to get a voice that resembles the official voice used in the Donkey Kong Country cartoon, of which I linked a few video examples (he's in every episode, so there are plentiful examples of DK speaking throughout the entire series).

You can pretty much watch any episode for good examples of DK talking. Some choice ones are From Zero to Hero , The Curse of Kongo Bongo , The Legend of the Crystal Coconut , Bug a Booie , and To the Moon Baboon.

The most accurate description I've ever heard of DK's cartoon voice and personality is "the 'hip character' from a 90's after-school special." There's no denying that DK's overall demeanor and personality were very typical of what made a lead cool and appealing to kids in the 90s.

He's very confident, to a fault. He thinks he's the coolest cat on the block, basically. He is going to rule the island someday and he knows that, and he wants everyone else to know it too.

However, as this story progresses, DK takes to heart that he needs to "grow up." In a lot of ways, Legend of the Crystal Turnabout is a story about DK learning how the most important things to him are not his future rulership, but his friends and family.

The sides they read from:
  • Here are a few general lines:

"And I'm Donkey Kong! I'm the future ruler of Kongo Bongo! So, on behalf of everyone here... I'd like to give you the warmest welcome we can give!"

"Well, aaaassss future ruler, It should be my duty to spread the mondo awesome culture Kongo Bongo is known for! Dixie, Diddy, and I will all show you the best spots on the island!"

  • DK has a few emphatic lines when he's upset or surprised:

"All you ever do is look down on me! But whenever something goes wrong, who is it you always call to come save the day? Me! That's who!"

"Don't pay any attention to him. I'll have to go have a... a... a real firm conversation with him later, or something."

    "PHOENIX, DUCK!!"

  • Donkey Kong has a few monologues near the conclusion of the story.

"Come on, everyone. It's been over 20 years since we started this show. We've had fun times, sad times, stressful times, times filled with laughter, and everything in between. We've learned and grown from the experiences, and we're older and wiser than we were. Maybe we needed the Crystal Coconut to guide us for a time, sure. But do we really still need it now? Who honestly cares about who has the right to rule what? Maybe I was prophesied to be the future ruler, but the only thing that matters to me is enjoying life on Kongo Bongo Island. I want to live each day to the fullest with my fellow islanders, with my best buddies, and with my family! That's really what we are, right? Family!"
